4.0 - 5.0 m
Up to 15 feet. CA ~ 12 ft
  Full sun ABB 2n=22 - Indo-Malaysian region

This hardy, cold tolerant banana plant reaches up to 15 feet in height. In spite of its height, it stands up to the wind well having a strong stem and root system. The pseudostem is prone to leaning quite a bit if there is a large bunch of bananas developing, so propping or support is recommended. The leaves are a silver-green color. The unripe fruit is an unusual and highly attractive blue-green color, making it a centerpiece for discussion. Once mature, the fruit is medium sized and the flesh is mostly white with a slight yellow tinge. Peel initially turns pure yellow, but at peak ripeness (1-3 days later), it has some brown or black spots on it. Flavor is tart with a hint of sweetness. Texture is slightly denser than whipped cream, but not much: it's very fluffy and creamy. This feature alone may be the reason the cultivar has been named Ice Cream.

Taste Description - tart with little sweetness to balance it out. Need to wait 2-3 days after peel turns yellow for peak ripeness. Texture-wise, it's slightly more dense than whipped cream:it's very light, creamy, and fluffy.

Personal Notes - Pups well.

Growth tips - This rather tallish banana grows well in a variety of climates, does well in containers and fruits easily. Likes evenly moist, well-draining soil with fairly high levels of organics mixed and mulched. Tolerates sun but at higher elevations needs a fair amount of sun protection. Has shown good resistance to winds in excess of 50 mph. In arid climates has shown some susceptibility to high ph 7.0. Will turn yellow with too much potassium and is not a fast grower in low humidity. Folds leaves at high temps but recovers at night. Over all this is a moderately tough subspecies. Protect fruit in high temps by placing light colored paper over top of fruit. Do not fertilize during fruiting. If the temps are high, fruit will turn black and rot. Has shown a weaker Pseudo stem and needs propping when fruiting to keep plant from falling over from the heavy weight of fruit.

Dessert

This plant is seedless diploid that is rendered so by bearing sterile female flowers. It is not produced commercially on large scale but is usually grown in backyards for family consumption. Its sub-acid flavor is reminiscent of a cross between an apple and a very sweet banana, which make a pleasing combination. It must be allowed to ripen fully before eating. The plant is quite hardy and will not be harmed by temperatures that are close to freezing. If frost is allowed to form on its leaves they will turn brown. The plant grows 12 to 14 feet tall and is mostly green colored with just a light margin of red.

Dessert banana, excellent fruit

The most popular greenhouse banana, will bear bunches with over 100 bananas, each slightly shorter than the 'grocery store' varieties. It will grow to about 8 feet(10 feet outdoors in South Florida) and has a solid heavy trunk. Juvenile leaves will have some reddish-purple markings but later leaves will be all green. This Musa is a fast grower with great appeal to the mass market. It has a fair cold tolerance. It is also suited for indoors and is a good container specimen which is also decorative.

Cold Hardiness - my dwarf cavendish survived -3 C with little leaf edge damage and -5 C in dry ground with greater leaf damage however persisting cold will kill the plant to the ground. Other 3 plants died at -5 and another has only stem damage, hardening off extends the frost resistance of the stem. It seems an unreliable plant for colder wet climates.

Experience in Florida has shown that D. Cavendish will die to the ground at around 27F (sustained).

One of the most cold hardy edible bananas. This banana was first obtained by Jeff Earl from Texas during the 1990's. This banana's close relatives have been grown all over in Central Mexico and the cold-hardy ones in Texas, and was called 'Hardy Mexican Apple Banana', although it is not related to the banana Manzano or banana Apple-cultivar. California gold is more related to 'Dwarf Orinoco'. California gold differ a bit from Dwarf Orinoco in the California Gold generally fruit between 4ft to 7f at the pseudostem, while dwarf Orinoco fruit at 6ft tall or more at the pseudostem. California Gold fruits are more rounded. It is one of the first to start growing in the spring, about the same time as Musa Basjoo.

Taste Description - The flesh has a salmon tint, is firm, edible raw when fully ripe but much better cooked fried, baked or otherwise, as are plantains.

Personal Notes - Very tough, thick leaf, very resistant to tearing and shredding.

Growth tips - Does well with drip irrigation.

Dessert banana

Also known as 'Pisang Awak' and other names through out the world. This group of lady finger bananas produce large sized bunches of sweet delicious fruit that is prized in the indonesian areas as well as the U.S. Somewhat sensitive to Panama Disease(fusarium wilt) The underside of a young leave is reddish-brown, turning green with maturation. The fruit from this variety has become popular in southern Florida due to demand from local tropical fruit brokers.

Taste Description - Very sweet, hints of vanila. Excellent cooked.

Personal Notes - Asian market exists for male flower bud. 4"-6" long fruit with a 35-40mm diameter.

Growth tips - Early debudding and deflowering can lessen problems with thrips.

Fresh, Dessert, excellent fruit

This is very similar to the larger 'Brazilian' but much shorter. Its sweet bananas are also smaller than that of the 'Brazilian'. It should be grown more widely as it has good wind resistance and very tasty fruit. Its smaller stature makes it more suited to small gardens, greenhouses and large containers. This banana-cultivar was imported from Brazil in 1979 and is a dwarf mutant form of 'Brazilian' known as "Santa Catarina Silver' or 'Santa Catarina Plata'. It fruits between 7.5 ft to 13 ft. It has a strong thick pseudo stem and a strong root system. Leaves are medium in length and will reach mature sizes of 1 meter. Leaves tend to be quite leathery and tough. It has shown good wind tolerance in storms up to 50mph. It has a tendency to hold its leaves tight with short petioles. The color ranges from Kelly green to a nice deep Forest green. It is cold tolerant, and resistant to all diseases. Fruit will ripen on the plant without splitting. The male flower is quite tasty when cooked and eaten in a salad.

Personal Notes - pups easily with higher nitrogen fertilizers. This banana is one of the tougher ones. Doesn't need as much water as some of the Hawaiian variates. Good heat tolerance. Grows well in arid climates and higher elevations. Has been known to tolerate winds in excess of 45mph. Grows well even with severely shredded leaves.

Growth tips - harden off to sun exposure at higher elevations. Water moderately, but do not flood. Grows well in pots. Feed regularly 10-10-10 or higher 20-20-20 with care. Grows well in full shade. Tolerates high temps with sun protection.
15. Musa Velutina Survival Zone - 9 1.0 m
3 ft
Full sun at parts of the day is fine. Time To Bloom - About a year to a year and a half. Some plants may even take two years or more till their first bloom.

Mature Height - One of mine finally bloomed, at 3ft.

Musa velutina, the hairy banana, or pink banana, is a diploid species of wild banana. These plants are originally from Assam and the eastern Himalayas. They are also cultivated in greenhouses and places like Australia.[citation needed] Its fruits are 3 in (8 cm) long, pink, and fuzzy. They are borne on erect flower stalks with a pink inflorescence. Musa velutina flowers at a young age, doing so within a year. The fruits peel back when ripe. It is often grown as an ornamental plant, but has soft, sweet flesh that can be eaten. The seeds are quite tough and can chip a tooth. To sow, first soak the seeds in warm water for 24 hours. They should be planted in fine compost and kept at a constant temperature of 20°-24 °C (68 to 75.2F) with full natural light. They may take up to 6 months to germinate. Plants may be placed outside during warmer months but should be taken in to a conservatory or greenhouse and protected in winter.
