Building Beds

Farm beds workBuilding Beds

Building farm beds is easy but can be quite time consuming in a large farm especially when using hand tools.

This is a really good workout though and should be approached with that kind of attitude.

The following steps show the way I chose to make farm beds.

Building the height of the bed is probably the most difficult task. Using a shovel, pick up soil from both sides of the center of the bed and deposit it on the top.

Doing this keeps things symmetrical which is especially important since the shoveled out areas will become the future irrigation canals.

No need to worry if things look messy during this phase of bed making. Subsequent steps will make things pretty again.

Use a rake once again to lightly pack in and smooth out the sides from all of the dirt which fell off the top during the previous step.

Use a rake to smooth out the irrigation canals which were automatically created when the beds were made.
