Sad and Ashamed to be American
Sad and Ashamed to be American

I grew up in a small village called Kenmore, located in Western New York State. I often look back on my childhood and recall how incredible it was to be American, and to be so fortunate to be a citizen of such a great country. The land, the people, and the feeling of freedom, especially when compared to many other countries at that time. The thought of living anywhere else simply never occurred to me.

Then a few years ago, I sensed a change. Barack Obama was elected our first African American president, bringing the hope of change and a much better America. I was thrilled to see a man with his demeanor, education, style, and grace representing the United States. But it was already too late. American society had become unsafe, overregulated, and divided. After the birth of our first son, we decided to move to a better place where we could be safe, basically free, and enjoy a sense of community long gone in American cities. We eventually ended up on a small and beautiful island located south of the main islands of Japan from which we watched American society further degrade into a place filled with violence and hate. The events which transpired during the presidential election of 2016 and the continuing post election trend towards widespread violence and discrimination has made me SAD AND ASHAMED TO BE AMERICAN.
I AM SAD AND ASHAMED: that out of millions of Americans, the only two choices for president during the 2016 presidential election were Hillary Clinton, a deceptive and untrustworthy woman, and Donald Trump, a racist, compulsive liar, and quite simply a disgusting human being. Out of millions of qualified and concerned citizens in this country, including a few honest politicians....oxymoron, it was such a disappointment that these two were the best the republicans and democrats could come up with.
I AM SAD AND ASHAMED: that the American people were ignorant enough to elect Donald Trump to be president of the United States. This is a man lacking in character and integrity, who has cheated, lied, and finagled his way to billionaire status and now to the presidency. Throughout his campaign he has done nothing but promote hate, anger, and negativity and has already set the stage for dividing the people of this country. The only hope at this point is that he does something within the next four years which will result in his impeachment. The sad thing is this guy is going to sleep in The White House, a place which has always been a representation of what the United States is all about. Trump sleeping there even one night will dirty this image of America.
I AM SAD AND ASHAMED: at President Elect Trump’s cabinet choices including, but not limited to, Steve Bannon, a self proclaimed believer in the ALT RIGHT, a group of men who believe in white supremacy, oppose immigration, feminism, multiculturalism, and often engage in the harassment of Jews, Muslims and other minority groups. Steve Bannon was associated with, and wrote for, the far-right website Breitbart News, a site which promoted white supremacy and the discrimination of minority groups across the country. It would seem that the Trump agenda is to fill his administration with racists whose only desire is to rid America of anyone who isn't white.[1]
I AM SAD AND ASHAMED: at the amount of hate showing up, post election, towards, Jews, Muslims, Blacks, Asians, Hispanics, and all the other minority groups who do not fit in President Elect Trump’s WHITE AMERICA. The descendants of all Americans where immigrants at one time which many people seem to forget. Almost every American has a story of relatives who came to this country to escape persecution, political unrest, war, famine, and economic difficulties.
I AM SAD AND ASHAMED: that the majority of Americans continue to uphold and embrace The Second Amendment of the United States Constitution (an outdated set of laws) which reads: "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed". The intent of the Second Amendment was for Americans to be armed against a possible overthrow of the newly established government, not to be armed with semi-automatic assault weapons, which are being used time and time again to murder and massacre thousands of innocent American citizens across the country every year. GUNS ARE FOR INJURING AND KILLING, NOTHING MORE, and should not even exist in a civilized society.[2]
