This is a story about an international couple raising and home educating three young boys on a small island in Japan, half living in buses, engaged in organic, self-sufficient farming in the middle of a mountain forest while dealing with climate, cultural, and personal challenges. These pages are about pretty much anything and everything all guided by our family motto, Taking Chances, Making Changes, Being Happy. Thank you very much for joining us on our ongoing crazy adventure.

Archive Thoughts

These posts were inspired by the 2016 presidential election and the turmoil which Donald Trump created during his four years as president of the United States of America....what used to be a great country. I am miles away from America (now residing in Japan) and continue to watch American society degrade further into a violent, paranoid, and materialistic culture. Now with the 2020 election finished, and Trump officially out as president, I was going to delete these posts. Then I decided it was important for my sons to know what their family stands for and what pushed us to make the choice to permanently live in Japan.
My Thoughts Circa 2016

When I began making this site, I really had no idea which direction it would take. The last few years saw me and my family change residences four times, including three international moves. Quite a lot for a non-military family. Anyway, each move involved taking chances, making changes, and trying to be happy. Those ten years were trying times for my family to say the least. We made changes that most people would not have even thought were possible but somehow we pulled it off and are finally stable, living on a small island in Japan. During those years, I watched American society degrade and posted many pages.
A Bit of Personal History

The year was 2016 and I was sitting with my wife and two sons watching the presidential election results come in from our small rental house on a small island in Japan. We watched online and stared at the computer screen in disbelief as Trump pulled off an upset win and became the 45th president of the United States of America. Who would have thought? We were in the process of selling my condo in California and purchasing a property up in the San Diego county mountains....all being negotiated online. We had no choice since the owner of the rental home had plans to use the house again. Rather than wait to get kicked out, we took matters into our own hands and made the decision to move back to America. This plan became clouded thanks to the election of Trump but the wheels of relocation were already in motion.

I was distraught and spent hours online over the span of a few weeks writing about Trump in the hopes some of my efforts would result in changes and things would improve before we returned to California. Nothing changed and after only six months, we sold the mountain property and returned to our small little island in Japan.
American President

Lewis Rothschild: People want leadership, and in the absence of genuine leadership, they'll listen to anyone who steps up to the microphone. They want leadership. They're so thirsty for it they'll crawl through the desert toward a mirage, and when they discover there's no water, they'll drink the sand.

Andrew Shepard: We've had Presidents who were beloved who couldn't find a coherent sentence with two hands and a flashlight. People don't drink the sand 'cause they're thirsty. They drink the sand 'cause they don't know the difference. (Trump supporters)
