We lived in the Nishino District of Minamitane Town for three years before
returning to America in order to complete the sale of our home in California. We
made the decision to return to Tanegashima and make it our permanent home. We
really enjoyed our three years in Minamitane Town and planned to return there
but no homes were available. We found a home in the Noma District of Nakatane
Town and decided to purchase the property. We very much like our property, the
location of our property, and our wonderful neighbors. The fact is we are now
considering moving because of the policies and lack of rule enforcement of the
officials running Nakatane Town. There are four main problems we are dealing
with on a daily basis. When we contacted Nakatane Town officials about these
problems, no assistance was provided. We are also hoping to meet with Nakatane
Town officials in order to discuss possible changes. We are planning to discuss
these problems on our website, tanegashimajapan.com. If no changes are made to
local policies then we plan to recommend to site visitors to avoid living in or
visiting Nakatane Town and opting for Minamitane town as a better alternative.
The following addresses the four problems in detail. |
Private Land Maintenance
The farm adjacent to our home is the property of the adjacent neighbor. For a
year after we moved to our home, no maintenance was done on the farmland. The
farm was infested with cats, snakes, and a wide assortment of insects including
an incredible amount of mosquitoes. We asked the neighbor to trim his grass but
he declined. Then we began trimming the grass, trees, and bushes close to the
border of our property to provide a barrier between our home and the farmland.
We should not need to do this but we simply want to be able to enjoy our
backyard.
We are now requesting Nakatane Town come up with a policy for owners of unused
farmland to at least keep their land trimmed in order to reduce pests. |
Hey friends. Many of you know I am rarely on the computer anymore. Today was a
rainy day and I decided to catch up on messages and write this update on our
situation. We are expecting a baby in a couple of months….another boy. We are of
course very concerned about the spread of the COVID-19 virus. As of this writing
(middle of April 2020) there are no reported cases on our island. There are now
four cases though in the same prefecture (same political unit as a U.S. state)
but on the section of the prefecture located on the main island of Kyushu.
Recently a group of young Japanese students from all over Japan came to stay on
this island for a year. This is an ongoing program which should have been
canceled this year but was not. The residents of this island are pretty pissed
off about this. The transmission of the virus by people who are infected but
asymptomatic has been estimated at 25 – 50 percent of all cases. Asymptomatic
transmission is especially prevalent among young children. Needless to say their
presence on the island has created concern.
We made the decision to totally self isolate now. We only go to our farm and to
the beaches where there are no people. We are no longer grocery shopping. We are
purchasing all of our dry goods online and we are growing more fresh food at our
farm than we can even use. We are currently using a quarter acre farm close to
our house which belongs to our friends. They let us use it for free since they
do not need to deal with weed control and because they are very nice. We are
also growing most of our herbs on the quarter acre of land where our house is
located and during the last couple of years, we put in over 200 fruits trees
including about 40 different varieties in our yard and bordering our property.
We are home educating our kids which keeps us from dealing with school issues.
And I spent the last couple of years changing our property into a place which is
interesting and educational for our kids….basically converted our property into
a virtual park….please see picture above. There is a huge animal habitat with a
rock mountain and a pond which now has four turtles, snails, a variety of
different tadpoles, frogs, and toads. There is a huge greenhouse where we are
growing most of our herbs. There is a combination smoker and BBQ which we also
use to make bread. A huge picnic table constructed with a concrete block base
and wood top is located in the middle of the new recently installed sod. The
foot area of the table is filled with beach river rocks for drainage and for
foot massages. There is also a huge sandpit not shown in the picture. We are
also converting the other three buildings on the property into a family room, a
bedroom, and a playroom.
We are no longer meeting friends and very sad since we planned to get together a
lot this Summer. Hopefully the virus is finished up at some point and we can
return to normal once again. Hopefully all of our friends are engaged in social
distancing and being wise during this very difficult time for humanity. Be smart
and be safe. Please post a comment below if you like. Thanks. |
Well now 2021, thank goodness, and with it the hope of a better year. 2020
sucked in so many ways, but nothing was more problematic than COVID-19, the
virus that originated in China and quickly spread around the world becoming the
pandemic that it continues to be up to the date of this writing. A world in
turmoil as the number of cases and deaths reached numbers unprecedented in
modern history. With economies crumbling, schools closing, and record
unemployment, it seemed like the virus touched people in every corner of the
planet. But not us. Why? Because we planned ahead. No we’re not psychic, and
certainly we had no way to know this virus was coming, but we were prepared
nonetheless. Will this be the last worldwide pandemic?....doubt it. Will this be
the last time economies take a turn for the worst?....no way. Can you do
something to prepare for these problems in the future?....you bet.
There are many reasons why we were barely affected by this pandemic. All it took
was a little bit of thought, a lot of action, and the patience to ride this
through. I have always been pretty conservative in my thinking, especially when
it comes to family and money. I consider myself to be an optimist but my
thinking is also firmly based in reality with a very strong “shit happens”
attitude. I have been though a lot, good and bad, resulting in life being a very
good teacher of what might be someday. I grew up in a very middle class family
and knew the value of a dollar, food, shelter, and all the other necessities we
humans need for a normal existence. My family was my education and my many years
of experience taught me to focus on one thing, and one thing only….security for
my family. The following is an overview of the way we live now. We are certainly
not a conventional family by any means and being out of mainstream society
enabled us to get through these difficult times. How did we accomplish this
amazing feat (simple actually)….read on.
SIMPLICITY – I googled the word materialistic trying to find the opposite
meaning and the best I could come up with was nonmaterialistic….duh. Anyway that
would probably be the best word to describe our family, along with simplistic,
and even minimalistic. Basically things don’t matter to us much. Sure we have
all the modern conveniences but we do keep out “stuff” to a minimum. Our
motivations are different though. I don’t like unnecessary or unused things
simply because they tend to get in the way, while my wife doesn’t like them
around because it means more house cleaning. Our kids want for nothing as they
have plenty of lego, educational games, and of course their ipad. What more do
they need. They were not over spoiled from day one and are happy with what they
have and rarely ask for more.
CASH – I really hate, no strike that, I will not pay for anything with credit.
This is key to avoiding the economic effects of a pandemic. I know of many
friends, mostly Americans, who live paycheck to paycheck, have a very high
percentage of their incomes devoted to loan payments, and depend on two incomes
to make it every month. How do these people sleep at night? We purchased our
home with cash, along with our two buses and truck, and aside from buying dry
food online, we rarely make purchases. When we do, it is always cash.
Work – We don’t work, at least in the conventional sense. I retired at age 40,
when I disposed of a very successful real estate appraisal business, and
returned to college, this time to obtain a degree in Japanese studies. I made a
commitment to myself at that time to take steps to avoid ever needing to work
again. We make a bit of money from Google ads on my Fun Easy English language
learning site and that’s it. We are fortunate to be in Japan where health
insurance is based on income, which means mega cheap for us. Luckily savings in
the bank are excluded from premium calculations. And kids are totally free until
something like 16 years old. In addition, Japan issues a sizeable monthly
disbursement per child to families regardless of income.
Expenses – We are able to cut our expenses mostly due to the benefits of being
on this wonderful island. The beaches, our favorite fishing spots, and
everything else we need is within a few minutes drive. This greatly reduces fuel
expenses, in fact, we drive only a couple of thousand kilometers per years, all
three vehicles combined. Thanks to the moderating effects of the ocean, very
little money is needed for heating and cooling. We use wood in our BBQ and
smoker for much of our cooking during the Summer months. We barely own any
clothes….not needed in this place. Not saying the locals are dumpy but many of
them are farmers and can’t be bothered to worry about fashion. And the surfers
walk around half naked much of the year. We are happy to feel comfortable
dressing simply, okay dumpy, without the fashion requirements of living in the
city.
Farming – We are very involved with our farms which are now supplying 100
percent of our fruit and veggie needs. We use a huge farm which belongs to our
friend and are in the process of purchasing a couple of adjacent farms which
will double our production. We already produce way more than we can use and plan
on selling the surplus in the next couple of years. We use much of the excess
produced as a repayment in kind for things we receive from our friend. A couple
of our friends work on fishing boats and come to the house every week or so with
tons of fish which is one of our main sources of protein and omega 3 oils. The
kids really like eating fish.
Property – I converted this place into a virtual park. Plenty of things for the
kids to do and a wonderful yard for relaxing. We rarely even feel the need to
leave this property.
Education – Our kids have been home with us since they were born. They are being
“home learned” and did not need to go through the stress of being in school and
then going through school closings during the pandemic. |
My Healthy Diet
I am definitely not a health food nut, not even close. I do try and eat good
though. Back in 2019, I found out, by self diagnosis, that I had RA, AKA
rheumatoid arthritis. We had a Summer party at the house during August of that
year and I drank, what might be referred to as, an insane amount of beer with my
friends. The next day I got what is known in the RA world as a “flare up”, which
is basically an intense amount of pain in a set of joints on your body. In this
case, it was my hips. I couldn’t walk, at all, for three days without
assistance. I had to pee in a PET bottle and eat while lying on the floor….I was
miserable.
I was easily able to give up beer after that day but continued to drink wine and
eat refined carbohydrates, which are inflammatory, and although the flare up
subsided, I wasn’t in the nutrition place that I wanted to be. Then a couple of
years later, I changed my diet, dramatically. I’m now a couple of years into my
new menu and I’m feeling way better with more energy and more mental focus. I
decided to write about my new menu, not as a golden rule of what to eat, but as
merely an example of what is working for me. Here goes.
Breakfast
This is the meal that is easiest for me to eat very little, or to avoid
altogether. I usually need a bit of energy to make it to lunch and generally eat
the following every day.
Yogurt with fruit
A few pieces of home made granola bar
A half cup of coffee with a little unsweetened soy milk and brown sugar
Lunch
This is by far my favorite meal of the day, and most important, since I
generally expend most of my energy in the afternoon. Lunch is the same every
day.
Fish 2 large Pacific Saury
Natto a full bowl of these fermented soybeans
Kimchi A half bowl of fermented veggies in spicy sauce
Tofu A full bowl with seaweed and/or cut veggies mixed in
Veggies A full bowl of fresh cut veggies with miso sauce
Herbal tea with homegrown herbs, usually mint or lemongrass
Dinner
This is the tough one for me. My wife is a fantastic cook, and although she
cooks healthy meals, and uses healthy oils, like olive and sesame, she does like
to make fried food on occasion. Dishes like tempura, fried chicken, and fried
fish are my weakness although I do try to eat as little as possible. |
YAKUSHIMA TRIP NOTES
Getting There
The first trip to Yakushima did not get off to the best beginning. The car ferry
(get name later) was much smaller than the Hibiscus ferry we were used to
riding. This ferry has a rule that only the driver can be in the car when
driving aboard to the parking spot. No an iron clad rule however, since we were
all able to ride in the car together when embarking back at Tanegashima. The
other problem was the ride itself. The winds and therefore the waves were
unbelievable. Not unusual for this time of year between the two islands but this
smaller ferry was being thrown all over the place. My wife began not feeling
good from the onset while it took me and my son an extra few minutes before
getting a little sick. We laid on our sides on the couches for the remainder of
the trip. This one hour ride messed us all up for much of the day. We still went
hiking but our desire to do a lot was greatly reduced.
The return trip to Tanegashima was better albeit still pretty rough. We made a
better choice this time and went to the room in the middle level and laid on the
carpeted floor for the entire trip.
Staying There
We stayed at a minshuku (get name later) called xxxx. This is a small family
owned business with a few buildings very close to xxxx port. Be aware that these
are shared accommodations. The building we stayed at had three bedrooms. The
bathroom, shower, and kitchen were all shared spaces. We were lucky the first
night and had the place to ourselves. The second night however, a Japanese guy
stayed in one of the rooms. Not really an issue but still not what we expected.
The place was very new though with a nice kitchen and shower and a western style
toilet complete with all the cool buttons for washing your privates.
Shiratani Hiking
We arrived at a little after 2 pm at the Shiratani visitor center. We were still
pretty wiped out and planned to only hike a short distance today. I packed way
too much stuff as usual. We paid our 300 yen per person entrance fee and were on
our way. The course is divided into xxxx sections, the xxxx. We decided to go
for the easy trail and push it the first day. The first tree we saw was the
Yayoisugi Cedar which was very close to the beginning of the trail. Most of this
trail is man made with wooden boards and what appear to be slate paver tiles. We
came up on a suspension bridge. There are quite a few of these along the trails
and afford great views upstream and downstream. Once we came to the junction to
return to the entry we realized this was way too short a hike and decided to
continue on. The trail became much more difficult with sticking out tree roots
and large rocks. There were also a lot of stairs. |
To Nakatane Town
We are writing to complain about the Nakatane Town Abuse, Misuse, and Overuse of
the Disaster Prevention Radio System. The daily announcements and time chimes
are very loud in our home and constitute noise pollution. Specifically we want
the time chimes and all announcements that are non disaster related to not be
broadcast over the public speakers. We are contacting the appropriate Japanese
noise related agencies to file complaints. All of our concerns are listed on the
following page.

According to your email the current owner purchased the property for $25,000. We
are currently using the following website to search for properties in Hokkaido.
http://www.ralsnet.com/hokkaido/sale/chuko.htm
There are currently 390 properties selling for $25,000 or less. There are many
livable properties currently for sale for the same price the owner paid for the
property.
We are now living on Tanegashima and decided to move to Hokkaido for various
reasons. We are looking for a property that is $25,000 or less that is basically
livable. This is going to be the first time for us to live in Hokkaido and we
are simply looking for a house that we can move into with all of our stuff. Then
if we do not like the house location, or the house itself, we will already be in
Hokkaido and can look for the house we really want.
The property for sale has the following issues.
There are no toilets.
The property can only support a pit toilet which needs to be sucked out every
month.
The property is located adjacent to a landslide zone.
The property is located in a valley close to, and at a lower elevation from,
Shin Nakano Dam and reservoir, a potantial hazard.
The property is located close to the Kameda River and in a possible flood zone.
The four lots included in the sale together result in a long and narrow property
which is not as usable as a standard square or rectangular lot.
The property appears to be adjacent on both sides to businesses.
The house appears to have the following problems, outside wall on the south side
of the property is cracked and possibly unstable, flooring in the kitchen is
damaged and needs replacing, flooring in the laundry room is damaged and needs
replacing, flooring in other rooms are taped or damaged and need to be replaced,
closets and built in cabinets need repair, interior walls are damaged and
peeling.
In addition, the house has been vacant for many years. There are no guarantees
of the following, the roof might be leaking, the plumbing system might not be
working, the electrical system might not be working, the foundation might be
cracked. The house could easily require $15,000 - $20,000 to complete all these
repairs and make the house livable.
Due to the issues mentioned above, and the competing properties currently on the
market which are livable and come with guarantees, we feel $25,000, the original
price the owner paid for the property, is reasonable. Please let the owner know
we will consider purchasing the property for $25,000 in as is condition. We are
actively looking for a Hokkaido property at this time but will continue to
negotiate with the owner for the purchase of this property until we locate an
alternative property to purchase. We are looking forward to knowing the thoughts
of the owner. Please let us know at your convenience. |
When this property went on the market.
Does everything work in the house.
Does the house have sewer or septic.
Is there a basement.
We are now on Tanegashima. We want to move to a cold climate. We were looking
for properties in the $10,000 range as a first house to move. Then we would look
for a different house after arriving in Hokkaido. We thought this is better and
cheaper than traveling many times to Hokkaiko to look at houses. $30,000 is more
than we were hoping to pay for the first house. We would like to know what is
the lowest the owner would accept for this house.
Do you think the house would be okay if vacant for a year including the
plumbing. |
The following links to my blog will give you a better idea of our thinking about
the move and other things.

Hey Friends. I decided to leave Facebook….well kind of. I am not canceling my
account. The fact is, Facebook is the only way to get in touch with friends from
Kenmore (hometown) and San Diego, and these friends are really important. I am
planning to check, maybe once a month for messages, and I am still accepting
friend requests.
Beginning last year, I canceled basically all of my social media accounts. This
year, due to recent events, I am no longer able to, in good conscience, use
Facebook. Since the reelection, billionaire high tech industry executives went
from extreme opposition to Trump, to ass kissing puppets. The worst has been
Zuckerberg and his decision to remove fact checking from Facebook. Conservative
influencers online are now more and more able to lie their way into, and sway
the opinions of, young readers. The amount of misinformation and hate online is
appalling, and now with money and power the only considerations, the momentum of
the conservative agenda is only going to increase.
This is not only an American phenomenon, here in Japan the right wing
conservative parties are gaining strength in Japanese government and emulating
Trump at every turn. Social media has become a tool for conservatives. The
democrats and liberals need to find another way to fight back before the current
administration is too entrenched. Unfortunately I cannot, at this moment, come
up with advice or solutions. At least for now, it seems like the only thing to
be hoping for is that there really is another presidential election four years
from now.
I am still going to post online on my personal blog.
https://howiehayman.com/
I am also trying to find a way to install a commenting application for friends
to use for communication. Anyway, best of luck to all of you and keep the faith.
The only constant in The Universe is CHANGE.
UNTIL THEN. |
Hey Daniel. Please feel free to ask anything you like either to me or my wife,
Akiko. Regarding why we are selling….Akiko’s parents are getting old and live in
Nara. She wanted to be a train ride away from them in case they need her for
something. We moved to the city next to Okayama where the Shinkansen train
station is located and gives her easy access to go to their place if needed.
The mountain on Tanegashima can be a permanent residence if you like. We made
numerous calls to Nishinoomote city and they said the following. You are able to
build up to a 10 square meter cabin without notifying the city. You are able to
build up to a 200 square meter home, in which case, you simply need to notify
the city but there are no building requirements and no building or completion
inspections. Basically you can do whatever you want. We were planning to build a
half circular cabin to get the most out of the view of the reservoir.
There are no utilities to the property. We opened up a large area of the forest
which faces south and would be perfect for solar panels. The city gave verbal
permission to use the reservoir for drinking or irrigation. You could easily
grow your own food in the huge farm we made there. The farm is totally netted to
keep out deer. You can also obtain a license to catch the deer as a food source
if you are so inclined.
Kind of interesting you guys were there a couple of years ago. Our campsite was
probably at the farm which we subsequently moved to the site with the reservoir
view. Actually we spent about two years living in four buses. We used portable
forms of energy and brought all of our drinks in huge containers. We usually
stayed for four days and three nights before returning home. We made an outside
toilet at different spots in the forest.
The nice thing about this land is the isolation although it backs to a public
park and of course the reservoir. A public toilet is only a six minute walk from
the campsite. The entire property is located in a designated wilderness zone
resulting in no property taxes. There are hundreds of sugi and hinoki trees on
the land which could be used for building a cabin. We put in about 16 varieties
of banana trees along with other fruit trees. The soil in the farm area is light
clay and loaded with organic materials.
Please check out this link for more details and let us know if you are
interested in purchasing the property.
https://howiehayman.com/property-mountain.htm
We are happy to work with you about price. We are not in a hurry to sell so
please consider this purchase at your leisure. Looking forward to talking with
you again. Until then. |

A Bit of Personal History
The year was 2016 and I was sitting with my wife and two sons watching the
presidential election results come in from our small rental house on a small
island in Japan. We watched online and stared at the computer screen in
disbelief as Trump pulled off an upset win and became the 45th president of the
United States of America. Who would have thought? We were in the process of
selling my condo in California and purchasing a property up in the San Diego
county mountains....all being negotiated online. We had no choice since the
owner of the rental home had plans to use the house again. Rather than wait to
get kicked out, we took matters into our own hands and made the decision to move
back to America. This plan became clouded thanks to the election of Trump but
the wheels of relocation were already in motion.
I was distraught and spent hours online over the span of a few weeks writing
about Trump in the hopes some of my efforts would result in changes and things
would improve before we returned to California. Nothing changed and after only
six months, we sold the mountain property and returned to our small little
island in Japan.
Anyway, many of these posts seem relevant once again as a second tRUMP
presidency is becoming more and more possible this year. |

solutions. At least for now, it seems like the only thing to be hoping for is
that there really is another presidential election four years from now. I am
also trying to find a way to install a commenting application for friends to use
for communication. Anyway, best of luck to all of you and keep the faith. The
only constant in The Universe is CHANGE. UNTIL THEN. |
Climate Change Affecting Tanegashima Island
Now June 2024 and we are in the middle of the East Asian rainy season (Japanese:
梅雨; rōmaji: tsuyu), also called the plum rain, is caused by precipitation along
a persistent stationary front known as the Meiyu front for nearly two months
during the late spring and early summer in East Asia between China, Taiwan,
Korea and Japan. The wet season ends during the summer when the subtropical
ridge becomes strong enough to push this front north of the region. These
weather systems can produce heavy rainfall and flooding. Today is June 17 and it
is raining like crazy. Our yard is flooded and the habitat for our turtles is
close to overflowing for the first time….the walls are about 30 cm high. When I
made my website for the island, TanegashimaJapan.com, back in 2014, the annual
precipitation was 2237.6 mm (88.094 inches), but now fast forward to the present
and those totals are now 2532.5 cm (99.70 inches) for 2024. Climate change has
now only increased the annual rainfall totals but has also increased the
intensity and duration of the rainy season which now typically lasts for about a
month. Incidentally, our home is located in the middle of the peanut shaped
island shown on the radar map for June 17, 2024. Our mountain is located a few
kilometers above Nishinoomote City which is shown on the map. |

COUPLE OF EARTHQUAKES
Yup a whole lot of shaking going on tonight. A 3.6 magnitude earthquake a little
after 7 pm right off the coast of our little island and then a 6.2 magnitude
earthquake about two hours later off the coast of a neighbor island.

TYPHOON
Now getting slammed compliments of typhoon ShanShan, a category 3 storm spinning
off the southern coast of this island.
https://www.accuweather.com/.../west-pacific/shanshan-2024
Really strong winds and torrential rains with the worst to come this evening.
After lunch need to go out and close the storm windows. Spent the last few days
harvesting most of our crops at our house and up at our mountain. This weekend
planning to head up to our mountain to assess the damage. This is actually the
second year in a row an August storm destroyed the farms. Hey this kind of stuff
builds character….right? We were already planning to move from the island and
this is the catalyst we needed for the last push into that decision. Much more
about the move to come. Until then. |
Hayman Agroforest
We purchased a mountain in the Northern section of Tanegashima island in Japan.
This is our team, me, my wife, and our three sons. We are already working
together on our agroforesty project along with enjoying frequent camping trips
at our mountain. The following is basic information about our project with much
more to come.
Vision
To see changes in the standard farming practices used in Japan and around the
world, specifically, growing food without the use of chemicals such as
fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides. To show that a forest can be utilized
as a productive resource while still maintaining the natural habitat.
Mission
• Create a sustainable land management system
• Engage in farming methods which use only organic materials and result in
minimal changes to the existing natural flora
• Show that mountainous, forested land can be utilized to produce high yields
and be profitable
• Increase the biodiversity of our forest
• Improve soil structure and health
• Reduce erosion
• Increase carbon sequestration through the selective planting of trees and
shrubs to compensate for the removal of native vegetation
• Incorporate organic methods for pest control
• Create an agroforest that is both productive and aesthetically pleasing
• To educate others about our successes
• To be part of what we hope will be a growing trend towards food production
which, not only provides for the present, but is 100% sustainable and beneficial
to future generations |

Kenmore Days
I thought it might be nice to put a few thoughts about my time in Kenmore and
Tonawanda. Certainly was fun bowling at MilSher lanes....seems like that place
is still there, although with a different name. |
This is all about fun in Japan over the last few years. We traveled to America
from December 6, 2012 until March 4, 2013, therefore no entries in the Japan
section during those weeks.
A collection of adventures in my own country. Hopefully international students
from my English sites will find these posts interesting. We returned to Japan on
March 4, 2013. |

A METEOR HIT THIS PLANET
Hey one of those who does not watch the news or read the newspaper. Usually get
crap from friends who say you need to know what is going on in the world.
Anytime telling them no doubt someone is going to inform me if a meteor is going
to hit this planet. Then my wife came up to me and said hey a meteor hit this
planet. Funny.

FUN EASY ENGLISH COMMENT
This comment was posted on my Fun Easy English site within the last 24 hours.
“We discovered your website through a monk in Vientiane, Laos, who was using it
to learn better English.
He had graduated college and is now teaching Buddhism to eight and nine year old
boys at a temple.
His English was very good which he attributed to doing your daily lessons. Keep
up the good work.”
Although I am probably not going to be a millionaire from making this site, it
is comments like these which make the years of work worthwhile.
Definitely gratifying to know my site is making a difference in the world.
Thanks to all of you for using Fun Easy English and for giving me motivation to
make even more lessons.
Really looking forward to seeing all of you in the classroom again. |

Met a girl at the sd zoo who was a research assistant for a professor at a well
known university in southern California.
She was working on a study about the interactions between bonobos and people.
She said that they interact much more with kids than adults but she was not
allowed to put anything in her report about kids due to legal issues with the
zoo. Put this in the comments section. |

RIECHAN EMAILS FROM WORD FILE 12/16/2003
Howie chan he
I am sorry to send the translation so late. Anyway I finish to translate your
latest translation.
I pasted the translation on the email but also I attached the translation ok? I
am going to bed.
oyasumi-.
Rie
Dear Howie chan
How are you doing? Is every thing ok?
I am ok, too. Last night I was thinking about my future. I mean not far future,
near future.
Oh, don't worry. I am not depressed or sad. Just I was thinking about myself.
About my future, there is no doubt I like working and I want to keep working for
good
no matter what kind job I have.
Also I like studying as you know. I don't think I get job in the United States
during
my practical training time which is until next Aug because I have only college
degree.
Of course I want to go to University to get BA degree, but as you know I don't
have
enough money. If I want to go to university, I have to go back to Japan to make
money.
It will take at least 3 years to make money.
Either I cannot get job in the US or I want to go to university, I have to go
back to
Japan eventually.
Are you worried me being pessimistic? Don't worry. I am not being pessimistic.
I am a realist anytime. I am not a dreaming type of person.
But you know, no matter where I live, me is me. I just do my best.
I am very serious about my life. My job of my life is always do my best every
time in any kind of
situation.
Although I don't know where my life goes, just keep going, right?
I am very happy the fact that you are my best friend. You support me always.
It helps my life(American life, too) more easily and also meaningful.
Thank you very much.
This email sounds very funny but I just want to share my feeling with you.
That it!
Have a nice day
Rie
Dear Riechan
Hi. I was happy to receive your email. I was not kidding about supporting your
school payments in the United States. If you want to stay in the United States
and at my house you can do both for as long as you want. I can make the payments
for your school. When you graduate and have a new job, then you can pay me back.
You do not have to pay any interest. You only have to pay the exact amount that
I give you. I plan to be back in the United States this summer. I amnow teaching
at the same two schools and a coffee shop. I have designed my own lessons and
continue to work on the three books. The books are going to be part of the new
and improved International EFL Café. The site is in the process of being
redesigned and I am going to publish it soon. I should have Internet access from
the apartment soon. We can work together in the US beginning this summer. I have
become very popular in this area and more students continue to sign up. When the
classes get full, I am going to be making around $100 per hour. I am now making
about $50 per hour. I cannot believe how easy it is for me to make money in this
place for only teaching English. I want to stay and make enough money to pay for
publishing and selling the books including the books that we are going to write
together. I am really looking forward to working with you. No kidding, you are
the most incredible working girl. I am really proud of you anytime. Please keep
up the good work. If you need anything, all you have to do is ask. I am there
for you anytime. Anyway, gonna send you a longer email this week. Please say hi
to Dad. Talk to you again.

LEAVING FACEBOOK….KIND OF
Yup after all these years in Facebook and other social media, I am finally
throwing in the towel. This is not a decision I made lightly, In fact, I went
through this thought process before and ended up staying online. The reason I
joined Facebook in the first place was to market my websites and to connect with
old friends in America and with new friends in Japan. Then over the years, the
amount of miscommunications and misunderstandings grew (including today with a
very close friend) and I realized this was an easy place to make friends and an
easy place to lose them as well. Call me old school, but I miss that strange
form of communication known as face to face. In addition, the amount of time
spent online is keeping me from spending time with my family and from working on
my websites. In any event, over the next couple of weeks, I am going to reduce
my Facebook account to almost nothing, including pictures and timeline posts.
Incidentally Facebook has only represented about 4 percent of my entire site
traffic over several websites and about the same percentage in revenue. I will
happily accept that small reduction of income in return for more time with my
family and my work. For those of you “real friends” who genuinely want to know
about me and my family, please visit my personal site, where all the same
pictures and stories will be posted. After all, that was the reason for making
my personal site in the first place.

Akiko
Hi. I was eating kimchee for lunch and dinner. Gonna eat something different
today. I slept about 9 hours without waking up last night. It is unusual. I am
feeling much better than usual today. Last night I talked a long time with the
psychologist on the telephone. She said that Valerie is not doing good. Now that
Valerie can see me again she is really happy but it is making her too emotional
and kind of stressed out. For many years she wanted to see me and now she can
and it is like overload for her. Anyway, I talked about you with the
psychologist and said that I want to go to Japan. I said that I am happy there.
Then she said that if I go now it would be devastating for Valerie and maybe she
is really not gonna do good for a long time. You and I many problems anytime
with your family and now my family. Really want to be married and happy and not
think about everyone else and do what is good for me and you. This is difficult
situation. Anyway, I cannot leave until state situation is finished. Gonna try
to relax and continue to get ready to come to Japan. Talk to you again.

Really Proud of My Family
Hey not posting much these days but this has been an incredible month. During
the middle of August we went to the beach and got COVID. We were pretty messed
up for a couple a weeks. Much more about this in a future post. Anyway we are
better now and for the last couple of weeks we worked together and got the house
garden ready for putting in the cool season crops, finished up many projects at
our campsite up in our mountain, and cut the leaves off hundreds of banana trees
in our farm in an attempt to keep them from getting uprooted by the approaching
typhoon. Then we spent the last four days harvesting hundreds of bananas and
various crops including tons of herbs. The typhoon is now about 4-6 hours away
from our island. This is apparently the strongest typhoon to hit this island and
Japan has issued the strongest advisory ever. This should hit as a category 4
with category 5 wind gusts and seems like we are going to get an almost direct
hit but more likely the upper right quarter of the storm including the eyewall
AKA the strongest part of the storm. Anyway, quite an adventure, pretty exciting
for the kids, and for the parents too. The following link has storm updates. Our
island is called Tanegashima and looks like a peanut on the map and is right
above the current location of the storm. More storm updates to come.
FB post 9/20/2022
CRAZY COUPLE OF DAYS
We made it through the typhoon. The storm made almost a direct hit to this
island as a category 3 typhoon. Actually we got the eyewall in the upper right
hand quarter of the storm, AKA the strongest part. After an intense 24 hours in
a closed up house, the typhoon moved on to mainland Japan. The kids really
enjoyed this latest adventure with a candlelit house and lots of fun sitting and
talking and playing games. The power was still off and we decided to head up to
our mountain. The house and our other three outbuildings did not sustain any
damage. We spent two days preparing for this typhoon and it paid off. Even our
loquat trees, which border our property, were tied up and made it though the
storm. Our campsite in the mountains is a mess with a lot of leaf and twig
debris. The cool thing is the 130 mph plus wind speeds knocked over a bunch of
huge oak trees which were previously cut and hung up on other trees. Anyway now
we are camping and tonight is a bit cool with a beautiful starry sky. Thanks to
all of you who sent your thoughts and concerns. |
FB Posts

This is what our campsite looked like a few hours later. We made a pretty
difficult decision today but the only decision which made sense. We decided to
take out all of the huge oak trees on the border of our campsite to open up more
canopy and to make it safer for the upcoming canon build. This took about four
hours using two chain saws and a bow saw. About 16 huge oak trees were removed
to be replaced with a variety of fruit trees. Now nighttime and relaxing with a
campfire and wine of course.
3/15/2022
A Few Thoughts. We are camping up at our mountain again taking advantage of a
beautiful three days and two nights of gorgeous weather. Now Akiko and the boys
are in the tent while I spend a few relaxing moments drinking wine, as usual,
next to the campfire. Sitting in this beautiful setting I cannot help but feel
guilty for enjoying this night when, on the other side of the world, the people
of Ukraine are watching their lives being torn apart. The terrible reality of
being from a country whose neighbor is controlled by a sadistic dictator. As
this senseless war plays out with the west, especially America the “defenders of
democracy” cowardly sitting back and watching, our own situation begins to
unfold. The paranoia of American desire to control every corner of the planet
has led to the US pushing Japan to extend US military bases along the entire
length of the Ryukyu islands which, unfortunately includes our island of
Tanegashima and the neighboring, and uninhabited island of Mageshima. We are
worried our quiet island existence will soon go the direction of Okinawa. Really
sad to watch the world heading in the wrong direction. More bombs, more
fighting, and it goes on and on. The way I see it is, humans have two
shortcomings….not learning from history and short memories. The last six years
really diminished my faith in humanity. It began with Trump being elected,
continued with the incredible worldwide mishandling of the COVID pandemic, and
now this awful, and senseless war in Ukraine. There are many mottos which guide
my plans for the future. I consider myself to be a very optimistic person but,
in these times, the motto which guides me the most is “hope for the best but
prepare for the worst”. We are in the process of making many changes to our
situation. Much more about this in future posts….the story continues.
1/3/2022
Happy New Year to all our family and friends out there. We are up at our
mountain for our first camping trip of the new year. And tonight is pretty cool
with temps around 50 F for the low tonight but warming up to about 60 F
tomorrow. The picture is us hanging out in the tent reading and watching music
videos. Now outside at the campfire drinking wine and listening to Estes Tonne
one of many favorite classical guitarists. Tonight is a new moon and a bazillion
stars can be seen through the recently opened canopy at our campsite. A
wonderful evening for sure. Tomorrow returning to work preparing beds for the
Spring and making plans for a log cabin. Hoping you are all well and staying
safe during the pandemic. Looking forward to meeting many of you this year.
Until then.
11/6/2021
This is a picture of our campsite. We recently completed our ninth overnight
camping trip. Painted the bus with camouflage colors, took out the passenger
seat, and built a storage cabinet for tools and supplies. The bus is also being
used for sleeping and to store our futons and sleeping bags when we return home.
The tent sets up in minutes, and a playpen is connected to the tent entry, which
was built using the construction grade bamboo growing along the sides of the
access road. The picnic table came from the house which we were rarely using and
is now connected to the trunks of two cypress trees which were finished and
needed to be removed. The shelves on the right are actually the benches that
went along with the picnic table and provide a lot of storage for our camping
trips. The shelves are connected to a couple of cypress trees. With the campsite
now basically set up, we are turning our attention to building a cabin and
setting up some beds for farming. |

home from vacation and dump everything on the floor and then mess with it the
next day. In this case
it meant four loads of laundry and cleaning out the coolers and other stuff.
Anyway the trip was incredible. This is pretty much the recap.
Wednesday night
I picked Akiko up from work on Wednesday night. We ate dinner, packed up the
truck and were on the road about 9:30 pm. It was a nice drive with only a bit of
light rain as we approached Las Vegas.
Thursday, Thanksgiving Day
We arrived around 3:00 am and immediately went to our favorite gambling place,
Slots of Fun. This is one of the few places on the strip still offering two
dollar blackjack tables. We gambled and drank for a few hours and then went to
Circus Circus. This
is the only time we went to Las Vegas with no room reservations and Circus
Circus was the only hotel with reasonable prices rooms. They ended up putting us
in the manor though which are like little motels in the back of the main hotel.
Normally this
would be fine since we are usually up most of the time and use the room only for
sleeping, taking a shower, and um other stuff. Anyway, there were tons of kids
in Las Vegas because of some little league football convention and the kids were
playing in
the hallway. I went and complained to the management and they ended up giving us
a spa suite and reversed the room charge. Pretty cool. We went to the Rio hotel
and enjoyed their Thanksgiving Day champagne brunch. We ate and talked for three
hours believe it or not. They had all the traditional stuff and it was really
delicious. It began to rain like crazy on the way back to the gambling place and
washed out much of the roads. It was pretty cool though. Good thing for four
wheel drive. We
spent the evening gambling and drinking again and then went back to the room,
enjoyed the Jacuzzi, and then went to sleep.
Friday
We woke up and went back to the Rio hotel and ate their breakfast buffet. Then
we drove to the Grand Canyon. We ran into a lot of traffic at Hoover Dam which
through us off a couple hours. We ended up getting the campsite in the early
evening. We
were able to get one of two remaining spots and spent the night in the truck.
Saturday
We woke up early and went to the best spot in the Grand Canyon to watch the
sunrise. It was incredibly beautiful. We then spent the day visiting almost
every view spot on the South Rim. We made it from one end of the South Rim to
the other and
then watched the sunset at the best view point. We drove back to Las Vegas in
the early evening and slept for a few hours in the truck.
Sunday
We ate breakfast at the Paris buffet. Incredibly good buffet and excellent
quality food. We then placed ten separate bets on the Sunday games. We lost
money on the Buffalo and San Diego games. We were already ahead on our gambling
but because of
the football bets, we ended up losing 24 dollars total on the trip. We spent the
entire afternoon watching football at the Paris hotel. We walked outside on the
strip for awhile at night. It was really warm, almost like an early Summer
night. We saw the
fountain show a couple times in front of the Bellagio hotel. Then we went back
to the Paris hotel and hung our for awhile. We returned home at about 5:00 am
Monday, in time to take a shower, go out for breakfast and then take Akiko to
work. She was
able to sleep all the way back. I drove over 1400 miles in four days and it took
until today to get back to normal. |

Tanegashima Farming
This is a map showing the location and layout of the two farms adjacent to the
house.
The upper farm is located on the east side of the property and is approximately
255 square meters. This farm receives full sunshine from early morning until
late afternoon.
The lower farm is located on the west side of the property and is approximately
272 square meters. This farm receives full sunlight from mid morning until early
evening.
We recently were given access to another farm above the upper farm which we now
affectionately call the upper upper farm.
Lower Farm
The lower farm is located on the west side of the house, is approximately 100
square meters, and receives full sunlight from mid morning until late afternoon.
Although there is a jungle located on the west side of the farm, the west wind
is still very strong. The jungle consists of various tropical trees and vines.
The natural topography of this farm follows the street and eventually leads to
the ocean a mere 250 meters away.
This piece of land was pretty much flooded every time the island received heavy
rain. The problem was the slope of the land combined with the fact that much of
the rain around the back of the house and from the roof drained into this farm.
I found a lot of old roof tiles while leveling out the perimeter of the farm
(Japanese farmers of old threw out tons of stuff in their farms) and used them
to make a drain leading to the jungle.
Upper Farm
The upper farm is located on the east side of the house, is approximately 180
square meters, and receives full sunshine from early morning until late
afternoon. This farm receives a considerable amount of strong wind from the
north during the cooler months. A trellis was on the north side of the farm
using bamboo to support vine crops which subsequently reduced the effects of the
wind. This is my favorite of the three farms.
Upper Upper Farm
The upper upper farm is located on the east side of the property, is
approximately 120 square meters, and farm receives full sunshine from early
morning until early afternoon. This farm is adjacent to the upper farm. This
piece of land was basically a jungle which took a month to take out using hand
tools. The soil still contains a lot of roots.
The locals insisted nothing would grow in the farm for at least a year. Instead
of wasting an entire season, as a joke, I made a space exploration theme for
this farm and grew a ton of carrots on the letters.
We moved to Tanegashima for a variety of reasons least of which was the presence
of the Tanegashima Space Center. After the incredibleness (word?) of witnessing
several rocket launches, the pattern for this farm became obvious.
The design consists of a rocket, which in the picture looks like a phallic
symbol....lol....along with the letters JAXA and NASA which stand for the Japan
Aerospace Exploration Agency and the National Aeronautics and Space
Administration respectively.
This received a lot of attention from the locals. People were actually parking
their cars and getting out to look at the farm. Quite a few folks even took
pictures. A day after posting the picture on Facebook a friend who is retired
from JAXA came over to show his appreciation for the tribute to his former
employer. Good feelings all the way around. Thanks. |

Written around 3/2013
During the past three years in Japan I bought a car, purchased two adjacent
properties, one of which I already sold, made some really good friends and
basically saw a side of Japan which most gaikokujin (foreigners) never see. Then
it occurred to me....why not write about all this stuff. I am going to post well
known and little known points about living in Japan. I will try, as much as
possible, not to be too biased but there is a lot of good and bad, mostly good
in this country and occasionally my strong opinion about these points will still
show through. Hopefully you will find my perspective of Japan interesting, and
if nothing else, at least informational. |
We purchased this piece of crap property back on January 12, 2010. This entire
property was in much worse condition than we ever thought possible. After months
of working alone on this place, enough work is finished to post pictures. The
following link is to the main house information page. From there you can check
out a bunch of before and after pictures and other stuff. Enjoy.
House information and more pictures
Some of you might remember my trip to Japan back in the Summer of 2002 when I
stayed at an okonomiyaki restaurant the family of a friend owns. I stayed there
for almost three months, drank beer pretty much every night, and ate tons of
food. During this time I went hiking at Myoujin Mountain almost every day. The
following link shows the most recent pictures of our visits to the mountain.
More pictures of Myoujin mountain
The end of the camping trip included a very long drive to the top of Odaigahara
Mountain which happens to be the rainiest place in Japan.
More pictures of Odaigahara Mountain
This weekend we spent two days and one night camping in the mountains of the
Yoshino area in Nara, Japan. It was really nice and I was able to go fishing in
a very secluded place and actually catch something.

Traveled to America from December 6, 2012 until March 4, 2013, therefore no
entries in the Japan section during those weeks. |
Food Fair, Balboa Park
May 24, 2009 - 30th Annual Ethnic Food Fair at Balboa Park, San Diego,
California. Me, Akiko, and Masako were sitting on the lawn in front of the
entertainment stage. We bought food from the House of India. Ayumi and Yuka were
hanging out and waiting to get some food. This turned out to be our group. Much
smaller actually than last year. We stayed until 3:00 pm. Some of our other
friends came at 2:00 pm but we missed each other. Me and Akiko were eating the
fried bread thingy from the house of Hungry....um....Hungary. This is pretty
much a standard purchase every year. This is fried bread from the House of
Hungary. The toppings include cheese, sour cream, and garlic. It was smaller
this year but the taste was still incredible. Another standard purchase every
year. This is the combo plate from the House of India. A few of our friends are
from India and I should know the names of these foods but I keep forgetting. I
know the bread is called nan bread. Anyway, the food is pretty spicy which both
of us like. Me, and Akiko were with our friends Rakesh and Meenakshi Jain and
their two kids. We met Meenakshi a few years ago at a House of India performance
in Balboa Park. We became friends and spent a wonderful evening at their house
last year. Hoping to spend a lot more time with them in the coming weeks.
Meenakshi is very involved with the House of India and the lawn program at
Balboa Park. Last year I made several videos of the House of India performances.
Definitely worth watching. A belly dancer performing at the event. |
8/16 - party
8/17 - 8/19 walking and bike riding.
8/20 - for the next few days could not walk even to the bathroom. Went pee in a
perrier bottle.
About a week later was able to go to the farm but hip joints were not the same
again. Was miserable every night along with knee and shoulder problems. |
