This is a story about an international couple raising and home educating three young boys on a small island in Japan, half living in buses, engaged in organic, self-sufficient farming in the middle of a mountain forest while dealing with climate, cultural, and personal challenges. These pages are about pretty much anything and everything all guided by our family motto, Taking Chances, Making Changes, Being Happy. Thank you very much for joining us on our ongoing crazy adventure.

Warmed Up

- After a couple of typhoons slammed into Tanegashima last month it was nice to relax outside compliments of light winds and mild temperatures. Some nice BBQ lunches outside and a bit of fishing made for a really nice month.

Picture - A really nice and tasty Autumn BBQ end of this month.

The most recent project was work on the new upper upper farm which runs parallel to the main road. The locals said this jungle was not being used and actually had no idea who owned the land. They said to go ahead and use this and soon after work commenced to take out the existing jungle. All the work is being done with hand tools. Yup old school for sure.

- Shai caught a 33 cm Flathead Grey Mullet the day before at the Minamitane west coast fishing pier number 6 which is close to the house.

Picture - Home - This fish was definitely the record compared with all of the small fish we caught up until now.

New Record Fish

- A couple of days ago Shai caught a 33 cm fish. The day before I caught this Indian Goatfish which measured 41 cm, at least before the wife got a hold of it and began preparing it for our next meal. This was now the new record.

New Veggie Store and Unknown Location

- Went to check out the new veggie store in Minamitane town. Then we went to some place unknown.

Kumano Beach

- Today was all about checking out some places on the other side of the island. Our adventure began at Kumano beach, and absolutely beautiful destination with nice sand, and incredible rock formations.

Picture - Us at Kumano Beach.

The north end of the beach has a lot of rocks for climbing and numerous tide pools for exploring. The south end of the beach ends at a river which culminates with beautiful rock formations.

Be sure to visit this beach on a sunny day if you plan on taking a lot of pictures. The sun illuminating the rock formations is wonderful.

This place is a must see for anyone visiting the island.

Hamada Beach

- This is another beautiful Tanegashima beach and home to the Chikura Caves.

Picture - A nice picture of the rock formations at beautiful Hamada Beach.

This is a very level beach and loaded with unbelievable rock formations. Many of these formations were carved out from years of erosion to form the Chikura Caves which are located at the south end of the beach.

At the entrance to Hamada is the beach restaurant which is open during the Summer and during special events at various times of the year.

This is another place you should put on your list to visit if you plan to come to Tanegashima.

Chikura Caves

- For those into the "sport" of spelunking, Chikura Caves is a place you would like. Especially at low tide, these caves can be accessed from the front and rear.

Picture - A few of the cave entry points.

The main section of the caves can supposedly fit 1000 people....not verified during the visit as there were only three of us. lol.

Depending on the angle of the sun and the tides, some really nice pictures can be taken at this place.

A visit at different times of the day also make a difference in the hues and patterns on the walls.

Be sure to visit Chikura Caves on your next visit to the island.

Hamada Beach Geology

- The geological formations at Hamada beach are incredible. This place is a special thrill for me as a former geology student in college.

Beautiful Fishing Place

- Then we saw this interesting and kind of scary looking octopus at one of the fishing piers. Then we went to a different fishing pier. This place is called Minamitane East Coast Pier Number 2 and fantastic. Really not sure if you can catch anything at this spot but it certainly is worth the trip for the view. We finished up our tour at a store close to the coast called the South Border surf store and Ohisama Coffee Restaurant.

- Facebook Post - ANOTHER FARM - A semi jungle located above the upper farm is connected to this property according to the neighbors. They said it is okay to use the land. And guess what….from tomorrow going to begin getting this space ready for Spring. This makes three farms adjacent to this house. Plenty of farmland for being self sufficient within the next few months. Pictures coming.
Goats and Flying Fish

- The neighbor brought over his goats to help get rid of some of the grass in the upper upper farm. This farm, AKA the jungle, should be ready for use next Spring if me and Shai can get all the weeds, vines, and trees out.

Cutting Trees in the Jungle

- We worked in the upper upper farm again today. The plan was to take out as many of the trees as possible from what used to be a jungle. This will be farm number three next year.

Picture - Home - Shai was very determined to pull this tree out.
Picture - Home - Shai kept pulling this tree and was not going to give up until the job was finished.
Picture - Home - Shai was able to pull it out but got hit in the tummy in the process, hence the grumpy face.
