This is a story about an international couple raising and home educating three young boys on a small island in Japan, half living in buses, engaged in organic, self-sufficient farming in the middle of a mountain forest while dealing with climate, cultural, and personal challenges. These pages are about pretty much anything and everything all guided by our family motto, Taking Chances, Making Changes, Being Happy. Thank you very much for joining us on our ongoing crazy adventure.

Typhoon Month

- A couple of typhoons, outside BBQ, and more setting up.

Picture - Storm surge and waves hitting a pier along the west coast.

The important news for this month was a couple of strong typhoons which hit the island within a week of one another. For a total meteorology geek like me these storms were way cool, albeit strong storms which decimated the farm and sections of the house.

This month we actually got around to setting up the BBQ, do a little fishing, and continued to work on this place.

Typhoon Phanfone

- Typhoon Phanfone was our first typhoon since we moved to Tanegashima about a month before. The storm hit the island as a strong category 2 typhoon. The strong winds and rain pretty much decimated the newly sown veggies in the farm. Ah but at least we were able to enjoy a typhoon party. lol.

Picture - Home - Hey what is a typhoon without a party. We decided to visit the local grocery store, which was actually open.
Picture - Home - Yeah we were smiling but a bit nervous as debris began to fly all over the farms.
Picture - Home - Um a bit of beer, juice, milk tea, and a bunch of fried food and snacks....only for today.

- Facebook Post - No utilities now. Bought a lot of snacks and doing home camping tonight.

- Facebook Post - TYPHOON PHANFONE STORY - Yup this turned out to be one of the worst typhoons to hit Tanegashima in many years according to the locals. During the storm we took a drive along the coast to take some pictures and videos of the waves which were reported to be about 30 feet high. We had planned to go to Maenohama beach but the tide and winds from the typhoon turned the beach access road into a river and we needed to turn back to the main road. We saw tons of debris including a huge farm barn door which had flown into the street along with many trees and a utility pole which was ready to fall over. Then we decided to drive away from the coast when a few of the wind gusts seemed to partially lift up the car. Thanks to all of this craziness we became hungry and decided to drive into town and incredibly the stores were still open. The people in Tanegashima are really tough. We bought a lot of snack food and alcohol and turned the afternoon and evening into a typhoon party. This storm ended up passing within a hundred kilometers of the island as a category three typhoon. Actually we were pretty lucky because the approximate 100 mile per hour wind gusts hit this house on the side with no windows. When the winds shifted towards evening the windows in the back of the house began to bulge and the storm doors needed to be closed. We spent the night eating and drinking and waiting out the storm. We watched as sections of the storage shed roof and siding along with the contents of the shed flew into the upper farm. Was really incredible. More posts coming.

- Facebook Post - PICKING UP AFTER TYPHOON PHANFONE - We woke up to find roofing and siding and much of the contents of the outside storage room scattered all over the upper farm and the street. There was storm debris everywhere and the vegetables growing in the farm were pretty much finished. A lot of work wasted but going to put seeds in again after the next typhoon which is scheduled to hit next weekend again. Actually a lot of the trees and bushes acting as wind barriers for the farms were knocked over. Planning to pick all these up within the next couple of days. Pictures coming.

- Facebook Post - ROCKET LAUNCH TOMORROW - Going to take a day off from the farm and go to see the rocket launch tomorrow at the Tanegashima Space Center. A Japanese H-2A rocket will launch the Himawari 8 weather satellite for the Japan Meteorological Agency. Himawari 8 will collect weather imagery over the East Asia and Western Pacific regions. Should be plenty of fun and probably not too crowded since it is during the week. Gonna post more about this.
Before Launch

- Today was a really busy day for us. We spent most of today at Hase Park watching a rocket launch from the Tanegashima Space Center. They pick up the garbage in this neighborhood every Tuesday and Friday at about 8:00 am. The residents of this community put their trash in special bags sold at the grocery store and then put the bags in a small building for pick up.

Typhoon Vongfong Preparation

- Geez another typhoon. Typhoon Phanfone, which hit the island about a week earlier caused a considerable amount of damage to the house and the farms. Typhoon Vongfong, now on the way, seemed even stronger. More preparation was definitely in order.

Picture - Home - This is the new dog gate next to the entry of the house.
Picture - Home - Pieces of bamboo where tied up to the patio.
Picture - Home - The wheelbarrow was tied securely to the wall.
Picture - Home - The last typhoon scattered farm supplies all over the upper farm. This time everything was going to be secured.

Picture - Home - The dog run was ready for the storm. Incidentally all of the farm tools in the picture were completely secured to the wall.
Picture - Home - The storm doors were all closed to make sure they all worked. A few of these doors were partially rusted out.
Picture - Home - A useless attempt to protect the flowers the neighbors were growing after the bamboo was cut.

Picture - Minamitane Nishino District - This is the house of our neighbors across the street. Pretty easy to tell they went though this before. Take a look at the brackets connected to the wall and the wood poles used to hold the wood up over the windows. When these folks board up then you need to worry a bit.
Typhoon Vongfong Arrives

- The second typhoon within a week arrived today. Ahead of the storm were strong winds and an equally strong storm surge. This storm basically wiped out the few things still growing in the farm.

- Facebook Post - TYPHOON COMING NOW - Getting slammed today again with really strong winds and a lot of rain. This after a really strong typhoon only a week before. Hey the locals kind of worried about this storm. Actually boarded up a lot of windows and tied everything. More pictures to come.
Typhoon Vongfong Continues

- Now the second day of the second typhoon to hit Tanegashima within only a week. This storm had really strong winds, and although we were much more prepared this time around, there was still plenty of damage. Today was not much rain but really strong winds continued to slam the island.

- Facebook Post - Typhoon Update - Posting this now with the phone since everything is off in the house. Began getting slammed with wind last night and continuing now. Town is desolate and practically nobody on the roads. Debris covering many places. Now sun is really trying to come out in the midst of this wind. Stuff flying go. Typhoon Update Again - Now online again using the computer. Typhoon is heading away from the island and onto mainland Japan. Went to the beach and the local fishing place and was able to take some incredible pictures and videos of the storm. Planning to upload these soon. Going outside to pick up the mess. More posts coming.

Relaxing BBQ and A Beautiful Fishing Place

- This was actually our first barbecue on Tanegashima. We bought a little BBQ set online and worked perfectly. the menu for today was sanma, our favorite Autumn fish.

Picture - A nice day of fishing.

After lunch we went to Minamitane East Coast Pier Number 3 to do some fishing. Tanegashima has an incredible amount of beautiful fishing places. This particular location is adjacent to the very famous Tanegashima Space Center. The views are fantastic and the fishing is supposed to be great.
