This is a story about an international couple raising and home educating three young boys on a small island in Japan, half living in buses, engaged in organic, self-sufficient farming in the middle of a mountain forest while dealing with climate, cultural, and personal challenges. These pages are about pretty much anything and everything all guided by our family motto, Taking Chances, Making Changes, Being Happy. Hi. I wanted to tell you Happy New Year. Akiko and I will not be able to make it to your house this weekend but thank you so much for your offer. Akiko is getting pretty nauseous recently and cannot handle a long time on the road. Should be better soon though. We would like to come up again in a few weeks if it is convenient for you guys. Thank you again.

Howie, Akiko

Risa,

Hi. Thanks. Yup, I needed to change many plans because Akiko is pregnant. Actually things will work out much better now. Many of the things I wanted to talk with you about changed now but not totally. I want to meet you next month and see if you are interested in working with SD businesses and making videos for the English site. Hey, I need a favor as soon as possible. I need you to go to the English site.

http://funeasyenglish.com/

Click Classroom.

On the Class schedule, go to the pages from January 1 – January 7.

Each page has a survey.

Please leave a comment on each survey even if you already made a comment before.

This is really important and your comments are very good anytime.

A longer comment is better.

I really appreciate this.

We can talk again during the week and decide when to meet.

Happy New Year and thank you again.

Howie

Masako,

Hi. I really enjoyed watching the game with you this weekend. Yup, now a chargers fan. Um, I need to talk with you about coming to your house. I was kinda hoping not to be real straight about this and finally no choice. Really do not want to hurt your feelings but Akiko is really pushing to go there. The reason for not going is because of the cat. Recently your cat is very sick and I am too worried Akiko could catch something, especially during the initial months of pregnancy. She is going to be checked the beginning of next year and if they say there is no problem, then we can come. Hopefully you are not upset and understand about my thinking. Actually we needed to cancel the Palomar trip too because Akiko said she is too wiped out. We went out for breakfast today and she was shindokatta and kimochi warukatta. She still has the Japanese work ethic and wanted to go to work anyway. I needed to push her to stay home. She will be home tomorrow again and then in on Wednesday to work a partial day. She pretty much spent the entire day in bed with the exception of making a quick lunch. Hopefully things improve after she gets through the initial three months. Akiko has become very homesick recently. Again, things should improve within the next few weeks. Send email when you can.

Winona,

Hi. I wanted to let you know Akiko is pregnant now. We are extremely happy and planning to move to Japan in a few months. This has been an incredible holiday season for us. Many dinner parties with friends at our place and theirs. We went to San Francisco and Sequoia National Park. Then we went to Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon for Thanksgiving. You can check out the pictures at this link.

http://picasaweb.google.com/FunEasyEnglish.com

This month we stayed with friends up on Mt. Palomar and played in the snow. This past week we went to a mochi party with friends. You can check it out at the following links.

Hi. I really want to thank you for the wonderful dinner the other night and the presents. It really was nice to talk about family stuff again. Akiko is home from work today and tomorrow. Bjorn,

Hi. I was picking up Akiko from work. She went in really early and was early getting off. We went shopping and now back to work again, um on the computer.

Anyway, about the program. Yup, definitely let me know before you enroll. Easy is good but tough will be better in the long run. Really I enjoyed the program a lot. My friend is a really good teacher. Sure does humble a person though. They give you this grammar test when you begin the program. Makes you realize Americans know very little about their own language.

Totally understand about you wanting to know everything before you manage people expected to do the same thing. Good policy for sure.

It looks like the storm will arrive soon. Should be a fair amount of rain and maybe snow for you guys. Should be online for awhile. Send email with any questions you might want to ask.

Um, the wood is easier. Actually I went through the TEFL program at the American Language Institute at SDSU. It was new at the time and a lot cheaper then. Because the program is university based, the certificate is recognized abroad as opposed to the online crap certificates out there. You can check it out at these links.

http://www.americanlanguage.org/amTEFL.html?nav=6

http://www.americanlanguage.org/tefl_tesl_seminar.html?nav=5

If you should decide to enroll in the program, definitely talk to me beforehand. The director is a good friend of mine and I can probably get him to be your mentor. The dude was tough and really turned me into a teacher. With your masters in music and the certificate, you would be able to easily find a job except for the age thingy. The certificate would make it much easier for me to qualify you to work in my schools though. Freaking age discrimination over in Asia. Really sucks unless you make your own schools. There is always China and Thailand though. Japan is tough now. Check out the links and send email with your thoughts.

Bjorn,

Hi again. Yup, I learned a lot staying at your home for sure. Actually Akiko is beginning to show much more interest in the economy and politics recently. Kind of difficult for her to catch everything in a difficult English conversation but good English practice nonetheless.

Another oil run, hmmmm. You know I was thinking you could do a pretty descent restaurant review and base your ratings on the percentage of crap you find in the oil of various restaurants, hehe.

Hey, I uploaded five videos. Go to the following link

http://www.youtube.com/user/sandiegoevents

Within the list of 39 videos, click see all.

The Palomar videos are at the top.

Click watch in high quality if it shows up under the videos.

One of the videos was shot with the wrong setting. Easy to tell.

The others are good though.

After you watch the five videos, go back to the main page.

Click Most Viewed.

Watch the first video on the list from the House of India. The kids are incredible.

Then watch the Summer of Change video with the dollar bill sticking out of the car. It took second place in the Democratic Party of California video contest. I received three thousand dollars and the video was used on television.

We totally got caught up in talking and forgot to listen to you play guitar.

Next time we should make a video of it and put it on YouTube.

Anyway, I was wondering if you want to learn Japanese in preparation for possibly going there.

Check out my Japanese site at this address.

http://japaneselanguageculturefood.com/

Then click pronunciation.

I set up this table as an easy way to learn Japanese pronunciation using English words.

You can click on any of the underlined test in the table and get detailed information about the sound and the characters in the Japanese scripts. It took me a year to get this together and set up these pages which now total about 1,600 hundred including the kanji pages. Planning to add a lot more to this site in the coming months.

Anyway, should be up late working again tonight. Kind of a bummer the renaissance site is not up. Could use some good music. Send email when you can.

Hi. I want to thank you for inviting us up this past weekend. Akiko and I really really enjoyed ourselves. Your home is incredible and it was nice to finally talk for hours without needing to rush Akiko to work. It was nice to see the real picture of living in the mountains. I really would like to get a place up there but need to think a lot more now after listening to your stories.

Anyway, the food was delicious and playing in the snow was a lot of fun. We would like to come up again when it is convenient for you guys. Should be able to get the pictures and video online sometime today or tonight. Now doing laundry and cleaning the house up.

I tried the renaissance station today but not working on my computer.

Really need to talk about the move to Asia. You really seem to want to do this and pretty much a definite for us at this point. More about this next time we meet.

Anyway, please forward this to Mary Ellen and send her email address when you can. Thank you again.

Hey, I picked up Akiko and she was pretty wiped out and went to sleep instead of making food. Although we are not bringing curry, we picked up a bunch of other yummy stuff. Sat around and got drunk, hmmmm. Seems like you and I will get along with no problem. Ah, those pesky accoutrements. Anyway, made this cool storm chasing page tonight. Still working out the details though. Anyway, see you tomorrow. Until then.

Yup, we plan to bring all the stuff. Sleeping bags, blankets, pillows, and toiletries. Please don’t go to any trouble. We are extremely low maintenance guests. I could tell you stories. Anyway, the plan is set. Going to the bagel shop early in the morning, pick up the promotional materials from my friend at 9 am and then off to your place. woohoo. Probably will send another email tonight. Today working on the Classroom section of English site. Basically setting up the scripts, tests, and other stuff in preparation for making the videos. Akiko checks the stuff anytime but she is really not into science much. Would really be cool if Rigel could check out the lessons. Ask her to correct any mistakes. hehe. Talk to you again.

12/19/2008
Ellie,

Hi. I really want to thank you for being there and talking with Akiko. I know this is a difficult time for her and being away from family and Japan is not making it any easier. The fact she can talk with friends like you makes her feel much better. I am really happy we could meet you this year.

Hey, one of these days it would be nice to meet you at the bagel shop for lunch and you and I can talk alone. No doubt I can learn a lot from you. Akiko is pretty quiet and I know your husband is probably the same type of personality. Sometimes nice for a couple of talkers to get together. Let me know when you can meet.

Anyway, I am spending a lot of time on my new, and very ambitious project, of providing a lesson per day on my English site. The site is now 1633 pages. You can go to the English site at this address.

http://funeasyenglish.com/

Then click on Classroom and you can see some partially finished lessons.

My friend is making up some shirts for me and then I am going to being producing videos in about a week. Kind of working on the scripts and setting up the pages now.

These are the other sites.

http://sandiegocaliforniaevents.com/

Hi again. Um, the chains could be a problem. Although, I met up with those dudes on the way up to the Lagunas one year and convinced them to let me up based on my driving experience and driving a four wheel drive vehicle. We do not have chains which could keep us from coming up if you really think it might be a problem. If we are allowed all the way up S6 without chains then no problem coming up. I know Akiko is looking forward to it. Hopefully the road will be good. Stay in contact and let me know if things improve today or tomorrow. Talk to you again.

12/18/2008
Bjorn,

Hi again. I was wondering if it might be possible to park at your place. I realize Akiko needs to wear running shoes since she has no boots. Might be difficult walking from the lodge. Hi. I checked it on the map and no problem getting there. Akiko and I plan to go out for breakfast early on Saturday and then need to go to pick up some promotional materials for the English site. The phone is usually off but the answering machine is on though. All my friends send email and pretty much we only get calls from telemarketers and do not use the phone except for outgoing calls. Hi. I was not happy you were not home when we returned last night. Akiko and I wanted to tell you the news in person and pretty sure you said you were definitely staying overnight. Akiko prepared dinner for you. The roommate set up a computer for you for nothing. As soon as your friends call then you go running to them. Suppose these friends are your real family in your mind. Was not happy about all of this but was happy you were able to return to your ex gf house. The situation will not be easy for you. Actually I stayed in the same house many times after splitting up and it can be extremely difficult. If you are happy then do what you think is good. Valerie,

Hi. I am really happy you want to come with us for breakfast. A couple choices. You can meet us at the house and drive with us. We then come back to the house at 8:15 and then I take Akiko to work. You can also meet us there at about 7:15. either is good. This is the location.

Hi. A week from Saturday, on the 13th, we are making kind of a tanjoubi party for a girl Akiko works with. It would be nice if you can make it. You do not need to bring a gift, but only something for the pot luck like the last time. We are also inviting another Japanese girl. We plan to play blackjack too. No money though, only plastic chips. Should be fun talking nihongo the whole night. Hopefully you can make it. Send email when you can.

Hi. I might be able to attend the event on the 6th but not totally sure about video taping. We are now involved in tons of projects, mostly related to my English language learning site. Kind of a long story better kept until we meet. Akiko and I will be leaving for Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon tonight and returning on Sunday. I can give you a better idea about the video and promotion when I return. Today is pretty packed with stuff to do. For sure we need to get together for dinner though. I want to spend a wonderful evening with you and your family and catch up on what seems like years since we all saw each other last time. Hi Howie,

Long time no see, hope you and Akiko are doing fine. I am fine, just little busy and crazy with the upcoming event, Dec Nights. Hey so sorry, I just send you the email when I did the press release, didn't even tell you the details about it. Believe me, it was one crazy day for me, but no excuses. So sorry again! Hope your back and leg are doing fine now, we have to do the dinner after Dec 5th and 6th for sure, then I'll be able to party better. Quick question, do you know any one or can give any suggestions regarding photoraphy during Dec Nights, videography regarding the same. This time we were wondering if we could have the video made of the event. I thought I'll check with you cause you are in this field, plus you take such great pictures yourself, who could be more better guide for me than you. Specially regarding the pricing, cause we want to be careful in that area also, if you know of someone who will do it for less price for the non profit organization. Sorry to bother you with all this, but please guide me. Thanks again and do say hello to Akiko. Atleast come to the event to see us all, specially my daughter is performing on Dec 6th it's a Saturday at 7:30 pm and she'll play Piano also for House of USA at 9:00 pm. Look forward to seeing you. Take care!

Sincerely,
Meenakshi Jain

I don't think you realize that I don't even talk to my mom. I didn't spend her birthday with her. I saw her for 10 minutes while I was at work. I really wanted to have a wonderful relationship with you, but I don't even know what to think about the whole situation. I don't know why you think I'm always spending time with my mom. I probably only see her a total of 20 minutes every couple of weeks. I don't even live with her and I don't even visit her family. It shouldn't have ever been only my responsibility to try and make plans and I don't like spontaneously showing up or making plans because I can't. I can't do anything unless I plan it way ahead of time. I don't want you to go, but if you have to then I guess I have no choice. It's kind of been difficult for me to come up because there are so many things that we've never cleared up or talked about. I still don't know what happened for six years and I don't know why that happened. Nothing between us was ever clear with me and I'm not a verbal person. It takes me a long time to come out and talk about things. So I don't know what to do. I'd like to work this out because you're my dad and I love you, but I'm not sure how to handle this anymore.

Hi. I really would like to get together and talk. Your days must be pretty full though. Akiko and I were commenting on your professional attire today and were wondering if you dress like that every time you work. Anyway, very businesslike and professional. Looked good.

We continue to make plans to go to Japan next Spring. Possible investment opportunities opened up the last few weeks in Niagara Falls though. Really long story there. Now finishing up the sweat equity thing on the condo. Putting in new windows and remodeling the kitchen cabinets. Really hoping to finish everything before going on vacation again at the end of this month.

Anyway, this country has a new President-Elect and can begin looking towards change again. This is an incredible time in this country and I was really happy Akiko could be part of it. I put up a new forum on the English site today. You are welcome to post your views if you want.

Robert,

Hi. Akiko and I figured any of the following. Probably you were trying to get us to go fishing, or the offer was valid but you wrote too many zeros, or you were losing your mind from too much sun, funny. Anyway, we still would like to come out but it seems the fishing is not going to be good based on your recommendation and the forecast. Let us know if the conditions change. Also let us know what you are doing these days. Send email when you can.

Nansai,

Hi. Yeah SD has been pretty dry the last few weeks but now getting foggy. It might rain this weekend, for sure a welcome relief. We might be letting a coworker from the company where Akiko works stay at our place for awhile. I met the girl again last night and she is going through some relationship problems and needs a place to stay. She will come for dinner this weekend to talk about it. Anyway, keep me updated with your situation and for sure let me know when you plan to be in SD. Talk to you again.

The address is 20 Camp St, SF CA 94110 It is very difficult to find a parking spot near my house.
There are a lot of parking spots, but always full, and kinda busy area.
If you can just pick me up and head to somewhere, it will be fine.
or, I can go to the place you want me get by train or bus.

Do you want to eat indian curry for lunch on Friday?
I know a good indian curry restaurant, and it's very cheap.
Kinda self service, but you don't have to pay tip (you can pay if you want)
less than $10 per each, and have free tea.
are you interested in it??
http://local.yahoo.com/info-21327497-naan-n-curry-san-francisco

If getting together at this restaurant seems convenient for you guys
let's do it. I can go there by bus, it's only 20 min journey.
If you don't wanna eat curry, never mind.

Hey, I am online now and need a bit more information. I can pick you up and maybe you can tell me a good place to park. I found two addresses for you and forgot which one you are in now.

Akiko is not sure we can make it at 12 but we will call you when her cousin arrives and then pick you up immediately. Her cousin arrives at 10:30 am but since we are a bunch of freaking tourist, we might get lost a bit. lol. Anyway, send your address now because I am making one of my famous komakai maps.

We are thinking about your restaurant although we are all on a very limited budget. Waiting for you to send email. Until then.

Howie,

I'm sorry, I barely have checked myspace recently.
Ok, I see the situation you are in.
I like to join you guys on Friday afternoon, since I have something to do in the morning.
so, please call me after picking up Akiko's cousin, I hope to have lunch together around 12pm.
If you call me about 12:00pm, it will be great.
I will be ready to go see you by that time.

You will have 20% discount at the restaurant as long as I am one of your party.
But, if we are a party of more than 5 people, we will get 10% discount.
Usually restaurants don't give big discount even to employees...
Our California roll comes 6 pieces and it's $8.
The highest price roll is $14, and comes 8 pieces.
Average price of Nigir is around $5.
We also have Teriyaki chicken, tempura, and some broiled fish, spinach salad, whatever.
It's up to your choice, but the average cost per person is around $40-$50 without drinks.
However, I can tell you that this is one of the greatest sushi restaurant in SF.

I don't have a car in SF, not necessary in this small city.
I always take train and bus.
I wanna see your new car.

Anyway, let me know if you have any question,
I am looking forward to seeing you!

Takumi

10/22/2008
Takumi,

Hey, I want to apologize for the late email but actually sent to your myspace account a few days earlier. Anyway, I totally want to see you.

This is the situation. Akiko has a cousin who is coming into SF on Friday morning. She will be staying with a Japanese friend there but the friend needs to work late until Friday night. Akiko and I will be driving up on Thursday night and camping overnight at a campground. Then on Friday we will pick up her cousin. We can spend the entire afternoon with you on Friday until your work. We might be interested in eating at your restaurant. We are wondering if we can get a discount. Onegai shimasu. Then maybe you can hang out with us after your work. Not sure what everyone wants to do but happy to spend as much time with you as possible. We are also spending the night with the friend on Friday night.

Then on Saturday everyone will be together and checking out the city. We can hang out with you again after your work. Sometime at night Akiko and I will be leaving to go to the Sequoia National Park and camp overnight there, unless we get drunk.

We need to be back sometime on Sunday night because Akiko is working the next day. Anyway, I am gonna call you on Friday afternoon or maybe you could meet us when we pick up her cousin. Let me know what is convenient for you.

Kind of not sure if you have a car now.

We bought a really cool Toyota 4Runner with 4 wheel drive.

Anyway, send email when you can. Really cannot wait to see you again.

Shari,

Hi. After owning my unit in the Brentwood for over twenty years, my wife Akiko and I finally went to a homeowners association meeting last night. I was pretty quiet about issues pertaining to the project for many years but became frustrated recently due to numerous problems and decided it was time to attend. After attending the meeting last night, I can now understand, and appreciate, the scope of what these volunteer board members are up against.

The following issues pertaining to, and affecting my unit, were discussed last night.

The plans for the new retrofit windows were reviewed and approved. I am forwarding a copy of the approved window plans as an attachment to this email. You, and my neighbors, will be informed when an installation date is set.

The board was informed that the recent standing water in parking space 191 soaked into the new thin asphalt coating and raised a small portion. Although unsightly, it really does not bother us that much as our truck is usually parked in that spot. I agreed to wait until it rains to see what repairs need to be made.

The board has agreed to take the removal of the pine trees under consideration.

The board is looking into repairing a railing which appears to be coming away from the 6840 building.

Please send email if you need any additional information. Thanks.

Ambrose,

Hi. I think about you from time to time, especially recently. Akiko and I go out breakfast to a local bagel shop these days and this dude from New Zealand is often there. Really cool accent and makes me think of my cool interior designer friend in Australia.

Anyway, pretty soon you will be finished with your interior design program and making money and getting famous. Must be a tough program. I totally understand about making presentations. When I was in college, I would find the instructors who were not requiring these presentations and take their classes. Anyway, designing homes will be fun. My degree and my career was in real estate. I spend many years self employed as a real estate appraiser and was able to see the interior of thousands of homes. It gave me ideas for my own homes. Now I am in the process of remodeling the kitchen. Taking all the stain and varnish off and then reapplying it. The work kind of sucks but already looking much better. Will send you pictures as the work progresses.

Kind of funny but you mentioned about putting on some weight and looking forward to Summer. Then I was thinking you need to wait a long time and then I realized your summer is coming soon. Actually I put on some weight too and will be doing a lot more walking beginning next week. Pretty warm throughout the year in SD.

Akiko and I bought a new, um used, truck recently. The truck is a 1990 Toyota 4Runner. Kind of older but in really good condition. I used to own the same model, with some differences, but sold it before I went to Japan. I really wanted a truck again. This week, Akiko and I will be driving up to San Francisco for a few days to meet her cousin and friend. We decided to turn it into a camping trip because of the truck.

Aside from the trip, not much going on. Akiko continues to work for the travel company although we are not sure if the company will stay in business. If the company closes we were thinking of opening English language schools in Japan or a bed and breakfast in New York. Kind of crazy ideas but both would work. My place in SD is paid off and no debt, unusual for an American. We would rent the place out and keep it as a back up plan.

No doubt you read about all the financial problems in this country recently. Crazy stuff. See what happens in the next few months with a new president and hopefully lots of much needed changes.

Hey I was wondering if you and Jo were still together.

Anyway, I know you are busy but try to send email again when you can. I want to know the results of your presentation. Talk to you again.

Hello young man

I was just thinking about you so I thought I’d send you a very quick email to say Hi!!

I have about three weeks left until my summer hols, so this is crunch time for me. I don’t have exams, but as I’m studying Interior Design I have to present my work in front of a panel of 4 people. Which in some ways is worse than an exam because it’s kinda all happening live and I get nervous and sometime forget what I wanted to say. Plus after you’ve presented they ask heaps of tough questions, so you can’t get away with anything…

I’ve put on a bit of weight since I’ve been a student, so in the summer I’m planning to get fit and healthy again…can’t wait! I’ve always been quite active so sitting around studying is a bit of a shock to the old system. Oh yeah I’m looking forward to getting some sun on my skin too. Look out beach here I come…That’s one great thing about living in Australia, we’re guaranteed to ALWAYS have a good long summer!

Well enough about me how are you sir? Are you still teaching Japanese?

Whats happening in Howies world?

Shari,

Hi. I received the parking permit. Thanks.

I spent a few hours and cleaned the oil stain in the parking spot per your request. A few pieces of carpeting were placed in the spot to soak up any residue. I need the HOA to allow those pieces to stay there for a few days.

Many other issues need to be addressed.

There are still two cracks in the concrete walkway which should be repaired before they split more during the upcoming rainy season.

The two remaining pine trees need to be removed. Your maintenance man, Mr. Wolven, spoke with myself and Marilyn, a neighbor in the same building. He said the trees are a fire hazard and should be removed. During the dry and windy spell this week, the trees shed an incredible amount of debris which now covers the roof of the building, my carport and is blowing onto the patio and getting stuck in the window tracks, not to mention the incredible amount of dust and pollen from these trees. These large pine trees belong in the mountains, NOT IN A RESIDENTIAL SETTING. In addition, the roots are the cause of the cracks in the concrete walkway. This could create potential structural problems for the 6840 Hyde Park Drive building if nothing is done.

We are being told there is the possibility the buildings will be tented for termites. According to Mr. Wolven, the decision was already made. He stated it is a complete waste of money and unnecessary. I cannot understand why you or the HOA does not follow his recommendations. He knows this complex. The people on the board do not know about construction and maintenance. In addition, these decisions are being made without notice to the owners and residents. Many of us do not want to attend the HOA meetings as nothing gets accomplished. I think that any important issues should be posted in the laundry rooms, or even better, sent to each owner and resident. We should be allowed to voice our opinions via email or regular mail. This system is not working and many residents are getting angry. Some stated they will not leave their homes when the buildings are tented.

My wife Akiko and I plan to attend the next meeting if it is convenient for us. It certainly would be nice if the board president would take some time to meet with us privately though to discuss some issues.

Send email about all this when you can.

Bjorn,

Hi. I finally finished with all the new truck stuff. The insurance, registration, auto club stuff is all done. Today took it in for a new radiator and belts. Spent the last couple days detailing the thing. Since it was used really cannot feel like we own it until completely cleaned out. Pretty anal but the way I like to do things.

Anyway, the trip should be pretty good. Planning to camp at three different campgrounds and, if conditions permit, take in a meteor shower this month. I am a total science geek and relish any opportunity to experience the physical sciences.

Would be totally cool to come up to your place next month. Let us know when you plan to go up north and we can schedule something. We can turn it into a pot luck and Akiko will make some food.

Anyway, if the truck is ready, we plan to pick it up on Thursday morning which means we would be hitting the bagel shop around 7:45. Not much time to talk but still good. Maybe see you tomorrow. Until then.

In addition, when you drove off today noticed some definite problems with your car. This week I am taking in the truck for a few repairs. Masako,

Hi. I want to thank you for the information. I was telling Akiko the other day that it is time to meet you again. The last time you came to the house, you saw a side of me which very few people ever saw. Many things from my past stay with me but I am able to control it. Now I am very comfortable with you and because of that and the wine and the conversation, I was able to really unload many things that night. Although it made me really feel better, it was very embarrassing for me and I needed time before seeing you again. I know you a very nice and good person and would understand. Close friends are like that anytime. Anyway, I want to see you again soon. Please send email when you can. Thanks.

I explained that a home depot floor guy told me "it was $1," but the casher didn't believe me and says " It can't be." She starts argue with me and there's a long line behind me. But she is stubbornly charging me $33. I told her to ask the floor guy who told me it's $1, then she called and verify the $1 price, but she is not sorry. Instead, she charged me the extra quantity for it, so I told her she made a mistake. Then she loudly making fun of me and "she still argue with me for the small amount." I guess how she said was makes other people to believe that I'm the stupidly who can not count the pieces and delay the casher process or something. Other people suddenly mad at me and yell at me. The casher is the one can't do her job and I couldn't believe why I have to be the one yell by them. I'm so embarrassed by the casher. I'm so mad at her. I didn't do anything wrong. She did mistake and she didn't apologize for it instead she made fun of me. What wrong with the people here. I agree people were much nicer 10 years ago. Akiko and I now are considering using the popularity of the site and opening English schools in Japan and possibly other countries. If this happens, we will be permanently out of San Diego, yippee. Quite honestly, neither one of us like the people in this city. The women are stupid and the men cannot form an opinion about anything. People are more interested in being loud, wearing nice clothes, and who you know. There is no sophistication in this city and no value for intelligence. Anyway, time to move one. Recently in contact with friends from New York and very refreshing to get straight answers about everything. Anyway, enough already. We are both ready and happy to leave. In addition, we DO NOT want to raise kids in a beach community with only one season, summer. It is too easy and the kids in this city do not know about hardships and do not learn to work. We are next to the high school and the kids are awful now. They look terrible and their language is even worse, using F—K for every other word when they speak. We want to raise kids in a more educated environment. Anyway, our thinking now. Send email when you can.

Hi Howie,

I just realized I forgot to address the matter of the recently installed landscaping. The purpose of that landscaping was not to create a sound barrier. There are no plans to create a sound barrier.

Shari Simpson,

Hi. I sent you email exactly two weeks ago concerning the problems at the Brentwood condominiums. The concrete cracks were patched but still no word about the parking space problem and the landscaping. Now resending the same email with additional concerns. Cannot believe it takes this long to get an answer. There has been a lot of complaining recently about the poor service from your company. I am keeping track of the time required for you to handle these problems.

This weekend will be the first significant rain in San Diego. Since parking space 191 will be flooded again, one of the cars associated with our unit, which is in your files, will be using guest parking since the space has not been repaired and continues to constitute a possible liability to the homeowners association. You need to inform the parking enforcement person, 6840 Hyde Park Drive, Unit A, of this situation. We will not be happy to find one of those nasty little parking violation notes on either car.

A few other situations now require your attention. Someone is throwing their cigarette butts on the ground and leaving them there. We already confronted the parking enforcement person, 6840 Hyde Park Drive, Unit A, since she is the only one who smokes in this building. She denied it was her, therefore, we are requesting you notify the homeowners association and put up notices in the laundry rooms. This is a disgusting situation for us non-smokers.

In addition, I want two real estates signs removed. The agent is Val Bushree, a Prudential real estate agent. It is my understanding that agents can advertise an open house but cannot leave home for sale signs up permanently. I was in real estate for 20 years and know in this market, the home will probably not sell for several months. These signs are posted at the entry, are unappealing, unacceptable and should be removed immediately. If not, then I plan to advertise my business in the front window of my condominium.

We are planning to purchase new retrofit windows for our unit. We understand there might be some special requirements for the windows. We are already considering windows from Home Depot to reduce the noise. We are assuming that we will not be required to follow strict homeowners association requirements as the noise from the street constitutes a health hazard. We are prepared to take legal action against any unreasonable homeowners association requirements. We expect an IMMEIDATE REPLY to this and our other points contained in this email.

Send email as soon as you can.

Howard Hayman

Shari Simpson,

This email serves as notification of observed health and safety hazards at the Brentwood Condominiums. I want you to note, and take action ASAP to remedy the following:

Hazard #1

The parking lot of the Brentwood condominiums was recently resurfaced with an asphalt coating. Parking space 191 was only partially resurfaced. A close inspection revealed the absence of new asphalt coating on the surfaces adjacent to the walls of the carport. In addition, the grade is improperly installed and now there is standing water in the parking space resulting in a safety hazard due to the possibility of slipping and falling.

See attached picture: Brentwood Parking Space Grade 1

See attached picture: Brentwood Parking Space Grade 2

Solution: Replace the grade and asphalt surface of parking space 191.

Hazard #2

The concrete walkway leading up to the end units of building 6840 Hyde Park Drive is cracked and the crack has become noticeably wider in recent months. As the rainy season approaches, this crack will fill with rain runoff and continue to widen. This constitutes a safety hazard due to the possibility of stumbling over the cracked concrete.

See attached picture: Brentwood Walkway Concrete Crack 1

See attached picture: Brentwood Walkway Concrete Crack 2

Solution: Replace the cracked section of the concrete walkway leading up to the end units of building 6840 Hyde Park Drive.

Health and Safety Hazard #3

The noise on Navajo Road has increased substantially over the last few months. I am now in the preliminary stages of taking legal action against the City of San Diego to get the speed limit reduced from 50 miles per hour to 35 miles per hour. We can no longer leave our windows open, even on hot days because of the noise. Even with the windows closed, we are unable to listen continuously to music or television. We are also unable to sleep in the morning. The landscaping recently installed on the Navajo Road side of the Brentwood Condominiums is UNACCEPTABLE. The homeowners association will need to reinstall new landscaping which has been proven to reduce street noise. The noise is now so awful, several elderly residents stated they need to stay outside in the recreation area because the morning and afternoon traffic noise is unbearable.

See attached picture: Brentwood Landscaping Unacceptable

See attached picture: Brentwood Landscaping Acceptable

Solution #1: Reinstall new landscaping which is thick and tall enough and has been proven to reduce street noise. In addition, the homeowners association to install new sound-proofing windows in my unit at the expense of the homeowners association.

I fully expect these issues to be looked into and remedied immediately. I absolutely DO NOT want these issues to go through endless discussion and debate before being resolved. These are Health and Safety issues and potential liability for the homeowners association.

I plan to use my popular San Diego California Events website and my media connections in the community to bring attention to the unacceptable noise situation on Navajo Road. I am expecting an immediate reply from you concerning these issues.

Shari,

Hi again. I am preparing a videotape to record the traffic noise on Navajo which will be submitted to you and to the City of San Diego. No doubt they will recommend sound reducing landscaping. Hopefully the board will be reasonable about this. I spoke with at least one elderly resident who goes and sits in the recreation area every day due to the traffic noise in the afternoon, which she stated was unbearable. Even on hot days, this woman felt pushed to go outside because of the noise. No doubt this situation would bother you if it was your grandparent. Not fair for these people to spend their retirement this way. Think about it. In addition, other residents whose units do not even front on Navajo have expressed anger over the noise. Forward this email to the Board President. Thanks.

Shari,

Hi again. I would like to address the points in your email.

1- The concrete cracks were patched after receiving your email

**** As stated in my previous email, we already noticed the cracks were repaired.

2- The Board president took a look at the parking space and did not see that it was a problem but did notice the oil spot which you will need to clean up

**** I would like a direct contact email with the Board President. I would not expect anyone to be able to perform a visual inspection during a dry spell and be able to see anything. I already forwarded pictures to you showing you the problem. In addition, the next day after the email sent to you dated September 18, 2008, your maintenance man, Mr. Wolven, was out at the parking lot doing an inspection. He stated that there was a problem which needed to be addressed. No doubt you trust his recommendation. Before the final coat of asphalt was installed in the parking lot, the company put an elevated patch in the middle of the carport. They then neglected to resurface the interior of the carport leaving only the elevated surface. The oil spot you refer to is actually sitting on the original asphalt and should have been covered in this most recent repair.

3- If any resident is found parking in guest parking not only will they receive a parking violation but will also receive a fine if they choose to continue to do so, pursuant to the fining policy in the Rules & Regulations.

**** Fine then. We will park in the spot. Again, I believe this is a potential liability for the association.

4- If I find the person who is disposing of their cigarettes in the common area I will send them a violation reminding them of the rules.

**** Pretty sure it is the neighbor in 6840 Hyde Park, Unit A. She is often smoking outside and the smashed cigarette butts are directly in front of her unit. I already spoke to her about it and no doubt this will not continue.

5- The Rules & Regulations state the following: “For sale or lease signs: shall be of professional and dignified appearance and size: not larger than 18” x 24”. One sign may be placed in the front of the window and one in the back on the inside of the window. A single professional sign may be posted on the Common Area at the front of the entrance to the complex only. It must be freestanding so as no portion of the Common Area (buildings, landscaped areas, etc.) is defaced.” Section 7.5 of the CC&Rs discusses this further.

**** Then the second red sign reading Val Bushree needs to be removed as it is in violation of section 7.5 of the CC&Rs.

6- I have attached the policy regarding windows as well as the application form that will need to be filled in and approved by the Board prior to installation.

**** I am going to read this information thoroughly.

This should help answer your questions. We also have monthly Board meetings and there is a homeowner’s forum at the onset of the meeting should you ever like to attend.

The meetings are not convenient for us to attend and I am not interested in being part of a useless debate. You are the representative for the homeowners and the liaison with the homeowners association. I expect you to relay all concerns to the appropriate parties. I am happy to meet one on one with the Board President to discuss these issues. I can already see there are going to be problems with the association concerning the noise and the windows. Hopefully these issues can be resolved without litigation. Send the email contact for the Board President as soon as you can. Thanks.

Susan,

Hi. I wanted to check in. Hopefully you are doing good these days, especially with all the garbage going on in the economy. Akiko and I continue to make new plans for next year. Now working on the condo, you know, the sweat equity thing. Remodeling the cabinets now. Taking off the old stain and redoing them. Kinda sucks. Planning to replace the windows too. Anyway, try to get together for dinner when you can find the time. Send email when you can.

Doug,

Hi. I was really hoping to see you the other night. Akiko and I brought you a bottle of wine. We wanted to congratulate you both on your marriage in person but maybe next time. Anyway, happy to give you advice about the Internet. Need to communicate via email though as our phone is off and no cell phone. You should definitely do the following on your new site.

Google Analytics

Google Adsense

Send email with any questions. Talk to you again.

Shiela,

Hi. I am happy to know your situation is stable now. Yup, a good relationship can definitely make a difference. Akiko and I really do many things for each other and nice to be able to talk with someone who actually listens anytime. We are planning to move back to Japan next year. Already preparing the house and doing many things. San Diego is nice and warm anytime but the people suck. Cannot trust them and they do not give a straight answer anytime. In addition, our English language site is doing really good now and need to focus in that direction. Anyway, keep in contact and send email when you can.

Mina,

Hi. Yup, I am happy to be with Akiko. She is definitely different than most girls who come from Japan. I am also very different from a typical American guy, especially those from this city. Anyway we are very good to each other and look after each other any time.

Yeah, definitely get together for dinner soon. It would need to be on a Friday night. Akiko works Monday thru Friday from 9:00 am to 5:30 pm.

I was wondering about your situation. We might be looking for a roommate next year. The rent is very cheap and the place is very nice. Talk more about this when we all meet. Send email when you can.
