- This hardy, cold tolerant banana plant reaches up to 15 feet in height.
In spite of its height, it stands up to the wind well having a strong
stem and root system. The pseudostem is prone to leaning quite a bit if
there is a large bunch of bananas developing, so propping or support is
recommended. The leaves are a silver-green color. The unripe fruit is an
unusual and highly attractive blue-green color, making it a centerpiece
for discussion. Once mature, the fruit is medium sized and the flesh is
mostly white with a slight yellow tinge. Peel initially turns pure
yellow, but at peak ripeness (1-3 days later), it has some brown or
black spots on it. Flavor is tart with a hint of sweetness. Texture is
slightly denser than whipped cream, but not much: it's very fluffy and
creamy. This feature alone may be the reason the cultivar has been named
Ice Cream.
- Taste Description - tart with little sweetness to balance it out. Need
to wait 2-3 days after peel turns yellow for peak ripeness.
Texture-wise, it's slightly more dense than whipped cream:it's very
light, creamy, and fluffy.
- Personal Notes - Pups well.
- Growth tips - This rather tallish banana grows well in a variety of
climates, does well in containers and fruits easily. Likes evenly moist,
well-draining soil with fairly high levels of organics mixed and
mulched. Tolerates sun but at higher elevations needs a fair amount of
sun protection. Has shown good resistance to winds in excess of 50 mph.
In arid climates has shown some susceptibility to high ph 7.0. Will turn
yellow with too much potassium and is not a fast grower in low humidity.
Folds leaves at high temps but recovers at night. Over all this is a
moderately tough subspecies. Protect fruit in high temps by placing
light colored paper over top of fruit. Do not fertilize during fruiting.
If the temps are high, fruit will turn black and rot. Has shown a weaker
Pseudo stem and needs propping when fruiting to keep plant from falling
over from the heavy weight of fruit.

 2. Musa Mysore
'Mysore' is a tall and vigorous plant growing to 16 feet. It is green
leafed with red midribs. Undersides of leaves have pinkish, waxy
coating. The plant produces very thin-skinned short fat "lady finger"
sweet fruit. 'Mysore' is wind resistant but should be propped up when
carry large heads of fruit. This important cultivar comes from India and
Pakistan. The root system on this banana is so strong that it never
blows over from high winds. The trunk is dull rust in color. Takes 20

markings but later leaves will be all green. This Musa is a fast grower
with great appeal to the mass market. It has a fair cold tolerance. It

- Cold Hardiness - my dwarf cavendish survived -3 C with little leaf edge
damage and -5 C in dry ground with greater leaf damage however

- This is very similar to the larger 'Brazilian' but much shorter. Its
sweet bananas are also smaller than that of the 'Brazilian'. It should
be grown more widely as it has good wind resistance and very tasty
fruit. Its smaller stature makes it more suited to small gardens,
greenhouses and large containers. This banana-cultivar was imported from
Brazil in 1979 and is a dwarf mutant form of 'Brazilian' known as "Santa
Catarina Silver' or 'Santa Catarina Plata'. It fruits between 7.5 ft to
13 ft. It has a strong thick pseudo stem and a strong root system.
Leaves are medium in length and will reach mature sizes of 1 meter.
Leaves tend to be quite leathery and tough. It has shown good wind
tolerance in storms up to 50mph. It has a tendency to hold its leaves
tight with short petioles. The color ranges from Kelly green to a nice
deep Forest green. It is cold tolerant, and resistant to all diseases.
Fruit will ripen on the plant without splitting. The male flower is
quite tasty when cooked and eaten in a salad.

banana is one of the tougher ones. Doesn't need as much water as some of
the Hawaiian variates. Good heat tolerance. Grows well in arid climates
and higher elevations. Has been known to tolerate winds in excess of

moderately, but do not flood. Grows well in pots. Feed regularly
10-10-10 or higher 20-20-20 with care. Grows well in full shade.

We are growing a few different kinds of bananas which are native to this
island. this picture is of a variety grown in Okinawa which is most
likely very similar to the kinds on this island. the picture was from
Wikipedia but will be updated with our fruit once we get a decent
