Howie Hayman

Hey Friends

I decided to try and complete a couple of projects that I wanted to do for years. The first is to sort through and keep or delete all of the old information from my computer files. The second is to go through old pictures (the kind on film), and match them up with dates from information contained in these files. I was going to delete a lot of these files, such as emails, receipts, taxes, and checking account information, but then I realized this information would be invaluable for dating the pictures. In addition, my kids said they are really interested in my stories and other stuff from back in the day. Anyway, it was simply easier to put all of this information in one place, this blog, and then sort it all out after. The information is pretty boring for those of you who found this page....please read or ignore at your discretion.

- I leave for Japan. The flight was good except for the kid behind kicking the chair practically the whole time. The food was really good. I had 6 cups of umeshoo. I met a nice girl in the airport after arriving in Los Angeles. Her name is Mika. She has my email but kind of not sure if she is going to send anything. She is from Mie ken. I introduced her to everyone. I met a couple from Fukouka who were on their honeymoon. They gave me their telephone number and address.

- I arrived in Japan at something like 5:30 pm. Keiko chan, Mie and her husband and their three kids and Ikepi were there. They took me back to Rie chans home. We had a lot of beer and talked with some of the customers. I was kind of drunk. After that the store was closed. I went with Okaachan and her friend to a kissaten near the house. I forgot the name but it was a nice family style restaurant. After that we came home and I went to sleep at about 2:30.

After that, I went to the neighbors hair styling store and almost got bit by the dog there. After that Okaachan and I went Shigi san otera. It was incredible except for the dark room. After that we went to houryuuji. There were lots of students. They tried to speak English. After that we went to a store and got sandals. After that we came home. That night I went with Keiko chan to an Izakaya called Bonzu. We had nabe, natto, fried potato and other stuff. After that we came back home. There were tons of customers. The ginza of Osaka, homeless area, lots of eki, lots of pachinko places, lots of stores. Okaachan bought shorts and a shirt for me. We had some kind of cream muffin. We got caught in the train thing because the friend wanted to keep the tickets from me for souvenirs. We rode the train a long time without paying. We met two American girls and showed them the way to the tourist area. We went to Namba area which is like the Ginza of Osaka. We ate at some restaurant and met two girls. We had lots of good food and drink stuff. Then we went to a kissaten with them. The one girl was really drunk and I had to kind of hold her up. Actually I was drunk too after having lots of beer, nihai and osake. It was lots of fun. We took pictures and exchanged information. Then we went to the homeless area. Then we took the train home. We did a lot of walking. After that I went with Okaachan to the onsen. It was really nic but kind of shy though. Then we went to the famous ramen restaurant. Then I went to sleep. We went to Tsuutenkaku. There we ate kushikatsu.

- I went with Okaachan to the yaoya in the country. Then we went out for coffee in the Shigi san area. After that we went to the bank and exchanged some money. After that we went to the book store and bought a map. After that we came home. Then we went to Yokohama restaurant and had curry and croquet. It was really good. There are two girls working there. One is really cute. Then I went with Keiko chan to the Izakaya called Ponzu. We had Nabe and other stuff. Then I came back and wrote an email to Rie chan.

Dear Howie chan

Hi! how's going? I guess that you are having fun time in Japan.
I am ok. My daily living is same as before.
I cannot believe that you left only a week ago. It feels like more than
a month ago. All of my family and friends said that you are like a Japanese.
Japan is maybe your real country.
By the way, why I write email in English is that I have a question for you.
I am doing ok about many house stuff but I forget doing stuff about plants stuff.
The small plant in the living room is ok.
Could you tell me about plants at outside, which is that how many times I should
take care of them in a month. I guess that big two plants need water once in a month if the weather is not so warm. but anyway, tell me one more time.

Have a nice and fun time in Japan!

- In the afternoon I had lunch with Keiko chan at her house. After that we went to the furuhonya and the next door supermarket. After that I had dinner with Keiko chan and Ikepi at his house.

Dear Rie chan,
Konnichi wa. I wanted to tell you thank you very much for everything you have done for me during the months we have been together. You have been much better to me than I deserve. I know two things for sure now. I should be in Japan rather than the United States and I know that you belong there. I also know that I love you more that words can say. I have been having fun and have had no time to study. Today I tried to study and was listening to music. I eventually thought of you again and lost it. Hontoo ni you mean so much to me. I can only hope that in time you will change your mind but realistically I really don`t expect this to happen. I really don`t think I can come back home. In a few days in Japan I have been able to get over almost all of my stupid habits. I have already done so many things that I thought that I could not do again. I feel kind of free. Aside from this, I seem to have developed kind of a physical problem over the last few years probably from being so stressed out over the years. I often think that I am not going to live very long. If that`s true then I want to enjoy the years that I do have. I cannot do that back home. I am going to try to find a job in Nara and then come home to get a working visa and to get rid of all my stuff. I plan to keep the condo though so you don`t have to worry about that. I really want you to stay there. I have no desire to finish the Japanese program at the college. It means nothing now. My Japanese has improved more in the last few days than during months of study back home. I can learn much more in Japan. Anyway, please don`t tell anyone about my thinking. If things don`t work out the way I want them to then I really don`t want to have to answer all the questions from everyone. I suppose this trip was destiny. If you ever change your mind, please come back to me. You know I always want you. I love you very much, please don`t forget that. Matane.
Howie

Dear Rie chan,

Konnichi wa. I wanted to send you a quick email to say hi and to tell you a few things. About the plants, do what you think is best. They probably need your attention about every 2 to 3 weeks. Anyway, I figured out a way to use email using your computer at your house. I think it could be expensive. Please find out when you have the time. For now I am going to check email about once a week and send at the same time. I am reading the received email offline. Please tell me a quick way to save the email to read offline. In other words, tell me what you do. Anyway, I am having an incredible time. In one week I have many stories and a lot of fun. In addition, I have made lots of friends and have been hanging out with them. I get about 3 to 6 hours of sleep every night and get drunk almost every night. Kind of putting on a lot of weight though. Anyway, that’s all for now. Until then. Matane.

Love,

Howie

- I went to the Nara kouen and saw lots of stuff.

6/13/02
Dear Howie chan

Hi! I am glad to hear you have a nice time in Japan. Thank you for telling me about plants stuff. I am going to do anyway.
About email, how come you can send email from my computer in my home?
I do not get it. I registrate phone number for the Internet, but the phone number is my friend's number. I am not sure that you can use the phone number in anywhere in the world. Maybe expensive or maybe not. I do not know.
If you want to read email offline, why don't you copy and paste all of your email to the Word, then read. Then you read and write email in the Word. If you want to send email, you can connect again and send email. How about that?
I don't know that my answer help you or not. I guess that what you want to know.
If you need to talk about this kind of things, leave me a message. I am going to
call you back. OK?
Have a nice vacation and talk you later!
I am very fine.

love rie

6/13/02
Dear Howie chan

I just finished to call my Internet company that is so-net USA.
I asked about the Internet. Did you set up something to use Internet on my
computer? How?
In Japan, we have to pay to both telephone fee and Internet fee when you use
Internet. Internet fee is monthly like $20 a month, but telephone fee is depend on
the area where you called. If you can use Internet on my computer, the phone fee
is depend of where is the access point in Japan.
If you choose the access point in Tokyo, the phone fee is going to be expensive
because of long distanse. If you choose the access point in Nara, the phone fee is
going to be cheap because of local call.
I don't know how you can connect Internet on my computer, so I cannot tell
exactly. A employee said that my computer can be used in Japan and USA even if
you have a US telephene number in the computer.
I am not sure, but if you can use, you can use.
But you have to keep watching about phone fee! It can be expensive if you made
the access point in futher area from Nara.
Anyway I think you don't have so many times to do Internet every day.
Go out and experience many things. You can do Internet after you come back to
the US as much as you want!
Only now you can talk with local people every day in Japan, so you should
use Internet a lot in the US.
I think you are confused because of my email. I cannot explain in English well
especially writing, you know that. If the employee explained well, I don't think
I can understand computer stuff though. haha.

Dear Howie chan

Hi. I have some questions about mail stuff. I opened all mail yesterday.
Most of them are no problem. They are just statement or advertisement, but
about some of letter, I think I have to ask you what I should do with them.

Farmer's Insurance: It says Offer of Renewal for Fire Insurance Exchange.
Amount will be $118.75.
Renewal Date will be Aug. 11, 2002.
Do you want me to make a check for it?

Washington Mutual: they send back checks which your father made and send before.
I don't know why they send back checks. Is it ok?
The letter seems like just a bunk statement(Transaction description).
So, if you have a problem about this, tell me what I should do with it.

these are my questions. Send me your request or answer about these letters.
Have a nice vacation and practice speaking Japanese.

Love Rie
