radio; the Korean War ended; Stalin died; Edmund Hilary and
Tenzing Norkay scaled Mt. Everest; Salk vaccine; Egypt
seized control of the Suez Canal precipitating Israel's
Sinai Campaign; ELVIS; SPUTNIK; Fidel Castro; the St.
Lawrence Seaway -- and here's what was happening in the Rose
Family
The following genealogical information was obtained from the book given to
attendees at the Rose Family Club 50th Anniversary Gala, which was held on
September 3, 1995 in Toronto, Canada. This is an ongoing project for me and I am
hoping to connect with as many family members as possible to make the Rose

- 1951 - Some recollections from Joyce: "Bella and Hymie
took a train from Detroit to San Francisco, fell in love with it and decided
to move there. On the way back to Detroit, their train ticket included a
free stop in Los Angeles. When they saw L.A. they thought it was paradise
and liked it even better than San Francisco. So we moved to L.A. instead
---- just by the accident of a free stopover Joe opened a linen supply and
laundry until it was destroyed by fire in 1953, subsequently opening Acme
Linen Supply on Howard St, which he operated until it was sold in 1956.

cleaners in a new strip plaza and lived in an apartment over the store. The

SATISFACTION GUARANTEED". Stanley and I were the only Jewish kids in our
school, so my parents would drive us to Toronto every Sunday so that we
could attend Young

years.) Larry continues: "Joe opened Smart Way Cleaners on Yonge St, which
operated until 1959, subsequently starting Admiral Linen which operated out
of the family home on Elder St. Everyone had a job to do, from carrying the
bundles, labelling, folding, and making special deliveries.
