Hey Friends

I decided to try and complete a couple of projects that I wanted to do for years. The first is to sort through and keep or delete all of the old information from my computer files. The second is to go through old pictures (the kind on film), and match them up with dates from information contained in these files. I was going to delete a lot of these files, such as emails, receipts, taxes, and checking account information, but then I realized this information would be invaluable for dating the pictures. In addition, my kids said they are really interested in my stories and other stuff from back in the day. Anyway, it was simply easier to put all of this information in one place, this blog, and then sort it all out after. The information is pretty boring for those of you who found this page....please read or ignore at your discretion.

Dear Mr./Ms. Last Name

I am writing in regards to the English language teaching job advertised on the Internet. I am currently residing in Japan and looking for a position as an English language teacher or Assistant Language Teacher (ALT), although any position is acceptable. I am requesting the opportunity to interview, and discuss the possibility of employment, with your company. I am available to begin work anytime after September 10, 2003 and plan to reside in Japan permanently.

Four years ago I had the opportunity to travel to Toyama, Japan. During my three week vacation, I became fascinated with Japan and Japanese culture. Soon after returning from my vacation, I began studying Japanese. I have many Japanese friends in California and we would often meet and study together. I realized how much I enjoyed teaching them English and began teaching business English, speaking, and pronunciation privately to individuals and small groups. In January 2003, I received formal English language teacher training at the American Language Institute (ALI) of San Diego State University in California. Upon completion of the training program, I worked as an Assistant Language Teacher (ALT) for an intermediate level English speaking class, a multi-level English pronunciation class, and an intermediate level Business English class all offered by ALI.

During the summer of 2002, I spent three months on vacation in Nara, Japan and in August 2003, I made the decision to permanently relocate to Japan. I enjoy working with and communicating with people and I am able to communicate in basic conversational Japanese.

I have included a copy of my resume to provide you with more information of my background. I would appreciate the opportunity to meet with you to discuss my qualifications in more detail. I look forward to meeting with you and I am hoping you will consider me for the position.

Sincerely,

Howard Steven Hayman

Dear Chiakichan
Hi. I want to answer your questions about meeting American guys. You have to realize that almost all of them are not interested in being friends or teaching you English. They usually want to sleep with a Japanese girl and after they get tired of them they find another girl. I have a friend who had two different American boyfriends this year and both times they found another girl. She is very nice and very pretty. These dudes are really idiots. Anyway, I had similar but different problems with Japanese girls. Many of them only want you to spend money on them and go to clubs every night. The other ones want to get married to get a green card in order to stay in the United States. The situation for you and me is kinda sad but that really is the reality. If you want another boyfriend you should really get to know the person for a long time. I have had no trouble meeting girls in Japan. In fact, I have gone out on many dates already. I want friends but kinda worried about getting a girlfriend. I really have to know more about them first. Hopefully this answers your question. You should think about being with me actually....he he.
Anyway, after one month of looking for a job, moving to a new house, and getting used to Japan, things are finally getting better. Last week I moved back to the same house I stayed at last year, which belongs to Riechan and her family. I have a different room this year which is much larger, directly above the family owned restaurant, and has a direct view of the train station. This is a great place to stay, to learn Japanese, and to observe Japanese society. Every day, except Thursday, I get to talk to the customers who come to the restaurant. The customers are from a variety of different backgrounds. This is definitely a learning experience.
I have a job as the marketing director for a small language school located four minutes away by train. I met the owner last year. The school moved this year to the other side of the train station and is now having a difficult time getting new students. I am working with the Japanese marketing director, a Japanese girl who can speak some English. I think working with her is going to be a lot of fun and a good experience. I have had numerous jobs offers throughout Japan including the Tokyo area and Tokushima. I want the flexibility that I have now, therefore, I have decided to continue working for this language school. Next month, I am planning to go to Tokushima for an interview though. The job is really good and I would move there if I could get that job.
Making new friends has been very easy. Most of my friends from last year, and my new friends, cannot speak English and it’s kinda tiring speaking Japanese every day. The good news is that my Japanese is improving quickly. Every week I have been going out with my friends to the temples, restaurants, coffee shops, and shopping.
Anyway, that’s all for now. If you send email, my reply might take a few days because the house I am staying at does not have Internet access. If I want to use the Internet, I have to go to the house I stayed at last month or to the language school, which only has one computer. You can call me anytime if you want on my cell phone. The number is 09042871709. Anyway, let me know what you’re doing these days. Talk to you again. Until then.
Love
Howie

Dear Mr. Fairlie
Thank you for your email and the updated job information. Recently I received email from the school in Tokushima and they have asked me to come there for an interview on October 30. It seems like you would need me to begin teaching at your school before that date which does not appear to be possible at this time. I am keeping the information you sent and I am asking that you also keep my information on file should another position open again in the future. Thank you very much for your time. Please send email if you have any additional questions. Until then.
Howie Hayman

Dear Seisuke Hiraoka
Thank you very much for your email. I am available for an interview on October 30th at 3:00 pm. I have recently obtained information about your school, Tokushima maps, and a bus schedule including arrival and departure times and fees. This is going to be the first time for me to take a long distance bus in Japan. I am able to speak some Japanese, therefore, I do not anticipate any problems. If you have any questions or require additional information please call me or send email. I think that I mentioned in my previous email that I do not have Internet access at my new home. I am able to use the Internet once or twice a week at a different location. I apologize if the reply that I send you is somewhat slow. Anyway, I am looking forward to meeting you next month. Until then.
Sincerely
Howie Hayman

Good afternoon,

Currently we have only two positions available, both of these are for an
immediate start. Please keep us in formed as to your up date. As the need
is somewhat urgent, we are not able to hold this open for a long time.
Quality teachers that are happy and love working with children that are
available for immediate start shall be offered the jobs.

I certainly look forward to your reply in the very near future.

Yours sincerely

Keith Fairlie
